Abandoned Toyota Dealership, Nicosia, Cyprus

Post by ChopsyOpsy »

Evening all,

I managed to blag myself a walk around the UN buffer zone in Nicosia, the last divided city. Within it lies an old Toyota dealership, abandoned since the city's inhabitants were forced to flee near war in 1974.

Despite how some of the cars look, they are actually in pretty good condition and apart from a few, are mostly complete. Some of them even have that new car smell. Given the nice climate, there is very little rust so would be perfect for restoration!

I'm assured by the guide that some are quite rare and valuable and apparently Toyota have expressed an interest in some should they ever become available. I know very little about old Jap cars so happy to be filled in on what they are and if they are indeed rare.

Happy to answer any questions if I can.

Very interesting set, would thoroughly enjoy having a mooch around here. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on that 1st gen Toyota Celica (looks like a 1600GT TA22) either.

I've done that walk through the green line in Nicosia. I think the story is that they were at a Toyota dealership in Famagusta when the Turks invaded, and were hurriedly moved to Nicosia for safety - only to end up within in the green line and therefore untouchable. Had they remained in Famagusta they might have been overrun, but would have at least been useable. Despite the stories that they are 'pristine' cars, with only delivery mileage, they are in poor condition having suffered some abuse.

There is an entire airport, and the remains of a Trident, inside the green line to the west of Nicosia as well.
