South West Landscapes- A beginner's perspective

Post by Seamus »

Morning all,

Over the last month or so, I've been trying to get out and about more around my local area, which has sparked a new found enthusiasm for landscape photography. After receiving much advice from Rob Laker, I purchased a 10-18mm lens and a couple of ND filters, and started exploring. Living in Devon, I'm lucky to have Exmoor, Dartmoor and some stunning coastlines virtually on my doorstep, so thought I'd share a few of my initial attempts with the new gear. I still have much to learn, particularly when it comes to editing, but I've found it very rewarding so far. Should keep me busy during the off season.

First, a few from a ramble around Foggintor Quarry on Dartmoor.

A week later, I returned to Dartmoor, taking in various locations.

Finally, a selection from a lovely stroll along the East Lyn River yesterday.

Shaun

It's all about light, light, light, composition and processing. Have fun and get up early.

Very nice, I enjoyed looking at these. You've got me thinking I should do the same in my neck of the woods in Wiltshire!

Thanks chaps, appreciated.

Rob, I'll have to go back to Windy Post at sunrise, only time you can get both the waterfall and cross in frame without backlighting.

Cheers,

Shaun

In our wisdom, my friend and I have set ourselves the challenge to climb every Tor on Dartmoor this year, kicking off with a 10+ mile ramble that ticked off 11 (though perhaps more it subsequently seems) last weekend. Here's a handful of those we visited, the rest are on my Flickr for those interested.

We also paid a quick visit back to Windy Post Cross as it was on the route

Thanks very much.

Thought it time to update this thread with some of my efforts from the last month or so. The tour of tors challenge has been postponed for various reasons (though hopefully we can get back on track with that sooner rather than later) though I've managed to tick off a couple more over the last month with a series of after work trips to the moor in search of a decent sunset image. My first attempt at Great Staple Tor was partially successful...

Brentor the following week was a bit of a fail...

Foggintor Quarry seemed to be a waste of a trip at the time, but I'm delighted with the outcome.

I also made the trip up to Hartland Quay to make the most of Saturday's glorious weather, a lovely spot that I shall be returning to later in the year for sure.

I forgot to update this thread, but thought I'd bring it up to date now I've pretty much completed my first year of landscape photography. These shots are from a variety of locations, concluding with my trip to London at the weekend.

Still much to learn, but it's been fun and rewarding getting out and about and experimenting with a different type of photography.

Thanks for looking, hopefully this thread has been of interest.
