I've used a D80 for the last 4 or 5 years at many airshows. The first 20 or so of these were taken with a D80 and a Sigma 120-400mm.

Most of my photos from the last few years have been taken with a D80. 45000 shutter releases and still going strong.

Hi the Nikon D80 uses basically the same sensor as the D200 but in a lightweight shell , my dad has one and uses it with a 70-300 vr and get great results . The focus speed it more dependent on the lens than the body when you use AFS lens . The only drawback is it only shoots at 3fps against 5fps on the D200
I think its a great camera and certainly can give excellent results
Hope this helps

the D80 won't do flying aircraft any better than your A290 - in fact it uses an older Sony CCD sensor (same as the one in the A200) & the AF is probably not as good as well.

I have used a D80 as well as other Nikon kit for years and I still carry the D80 as a back up. I tend to believe however that the quality of shot comes from first the photographer, then the glass and finally the body. I am sure folks will disagree but thats how I feel.

If you look at a lot of MACCs stuff ( not his more recent stuff) but earlier stuff for some of that he was using a D80 I am pretty sure plus not a top of the range lens and getting great results.
