The 70-300mm is by far the better optic of the 2 mate!

Interesting. Would you chose the optic over the extra reach?

Mate has the 100-400 and is about to swap it for the 70-300 L. Reach over optic? I'd go optic as the 100-400 softens up after 350mm

Oh and it's a twist as well. Easier than a push pull IMO and it's also cheaper on Amazon. HTH

There you go. The things you learn. I just assumed the 100-400mm would be much better

You may want to think about the 28-300mm Is canon L lens ,cracking bit of kit and you get the wide angle side which i'm guessing would be good for you and your travels!!

Not all 100-400's are soft over 350mm, Mine is pin sharp at 400mm. Not used the 70-300L, is it capable with TC's?

got to say my 100-400 (1 yr old) is sharp throughout the range as long as I stop down above 350mm. Have hired the 70-300 before and wouldn't say I'm seeing an improvement?

Perhaps there are updates/improvements to the glass AI etc. compared to older models?

Maisie the 70-300 L is not compatible with Canon TCs. There is no space at back of the lens for the teleconverter to fit in. Don't know about other brands of TCs though.

I've been using the 100-400 for 6-7 years and get generally good results - and when I don't it's down to "operator error"! I'm not sure that mine suffers from being soft at the 400 end but I often lock it at 350mm just in case. I use it on a 7D which seems a popular combination although it does seema bit susceptible to noise issues over ISO200 - but that's a body not a lens matter.

Also a 100-400 owner. The lens is variable. There are really sharp copies and there are really soft copies and everything in between. A number of 100-400s have better IQ than the 70-300, but the latter is more consistant.

Personally, I like the 100-400 because it's one touch.....it's much easier to adjust in a hurry IMO.
