Haha!

Next, take 1536 of those cameras and link them in an array...

You'd also need 150GB of RAM available, just to load one decoded image into your PC's memory (on top of however much RAM you'd need before that, to load the JPG / RAW file from disk and decode it).

And even if you had a hard drive/SSD that could saturate SATA 300 interface bandwidth, it would still take about 30 seconds to read the data for a single image from disk. Imagine sifting through an airshow's-worth of photos even at that best-case speed, and assuming instantaneous JPG or RAW decoding...? It would take 8 hours for 1000 photos.

I think "The researchers believe that within five years, as the electronic components of the cameras become miniaturised and more efficient, the next generation of gigapixel cameras should be available to the general public"... is rather optimistic!

From the BBC Web
Behold an image of the Seattle skyline using a "gigapixel" camera, containing 98 microcameras and the software to stitch together enormous images at a rate of three frames a minute. Researchers reporting in Nature say the device is about as large as a small refrigerator, but that hand-held gigapixel technology may be on the horizon
