2nd Canon body

Post by James1971 »

Hi all,

I currently own a Canon 600D with an array of various lenses that covers me from 10-400mm + 1.4x converter if needed. I'm thinking of getting an additional body to prevent the need of switching lenses during an airshow etc. I'm thinking of going like for like for the body, but would also be interested in opinions on opting for a better body than what I have. Money is a factor, so I know that the full frame bodies are out of the question. Or are they? I'd probably be looking at around the £300 mark, so opinions would be gratefully appreciated.
Currently I have;
10-18 ef-s
24-105 F4L
50 F1.8
85 F1.8
70-300 IS USM
100-400 L
I'd say that I'm pretty much done for lenses now...

Should I go for an older FF body (5D mk1 perhaps), only the one ef-s lens would need to be on the 600D making that my designated wide camera.

Probably too much of a drop in MP to be a serious consideration but how about a used 1D mk2? The used 1D3 that I can find from a quick search are still commanding between £5-600 which would be my next suggestion if you can find yourself some more budget.

2nd hand 7d's go for about £350 not a massive stretch really.

Thanks for the advice guys, I did look at an old 1D, but it might be a bit too dated compared to what I can get. The full frame is appealing, but as you mentioned the low MP is a factor.

I saw the 7D and that's looking like a good option.

The reason for thinking of something similar to my 600D is having the same batteries / cards etc.

If you want to use the same batteries, then you would need to stick that same range, like another 600d or a 700d. I would imagine that the 750/760d would also use those.

Anything like the 7d / 1d's mentioned would use a different battery type, and also compact flash cards as opposed to SD cards.

I do like the 7D's fps though..... Might have to be a trip to the local store to have a play to see how different they feel compared to what I'm used to.

Just to mention, the 1D series (I to IV) is not full frame, they are a 1.3x crop. The 1DS series are full frame, as is the 1DX. You may be able to pick up a 5DI for that money, or a 1DSii. I had a 1DSii, great camera and often overlooked.

If I were you I'd probably be looking at a 7DI, good cameras and almost in budget.
