Tamron 150-600mm Lens
I am considering buying a Tamron 150-600mm lens but was wondering if any members here have used one before and could tell me how they found it whilst shooting at airshows. I typically use a canon 1200d but will be using a 1300d in the future. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
2023: Shuttleworth, Abingdon, RIAT, Duxford

It's heavy! That is the one downside.
Had one since last year and have to say I'm very happy with the results.

Re: Tamron 150-600mm Lens
Love it, my favourite lens and a lot of glass for the money. Took it on safari to Africa and it has done a few airshows.
WEX Photographic (where I bought mine) are doing these for £739 which I think is great value.
I use it on a Nikon D7100 and D750 and it works great. Not the fastest at the long end (f/6.3) but I tend to leave it at f/8 anyway.
The range is good as well, I use the 150mm end more than I thought I would.
It's big and heavy (not too bad though) but it's a 600mm lens and I normally hand-hold 99% of the time. Get a sling strap though for when not in use or carrying around.
Most of these Flickr pics were with this lens if you want to see more....the exif is there anyway.

Just need to get better a props and helis but think that is more user error.
Shout if you have any other questions.
Cheers, Rob

Have you considered the Sigma 150-600mm Contempary?
Gives excellent results like the Tamron but is upgradeable and customisable via the Sigma USB dock
Well worth considering.

Re: Tamron 150-600mm Lens
Been using one on a 550d until I got the 70d a couple of weeks ago, it's now on the 70d and I'm more impressed with it now than when it was on the 550d.
As said if you go for one get a shoulder strap, I got mine free with the 70d and with just a few days out with it, I wonder how I managed without. You can check out my flickr in my sig to see a few example shots, remember I'm no expert.

Re: Tamron 150-600mm Lens
I use a Tamron 150-600 on my 6D on the cad and recently at Lossiemouth etc and she's a great lens.
Heavy, yes. But in all honesty if you get sunshine at any air show this year on a non full sensor camera , for the price the Tamron sp is the one to go for.

Dug mine out and using it here at Duxford, more war bird flying than expected and HAC have just added to it with their Spit and Hurricane.

Re: Tamron 150-600mm Lens
Apparently Tamron are announcing a new G2 version of the 150-600mm lens. No details of what the improvements are yet apart from what looks like a new tripod mount.
Would be very nice to have a E instead of A mount for the Sony.

Re: Tamron 150-600mm Lens
I own a Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary lens. Similar price to the Tamron.
Its a beautiful lens, by far my favourite lens I've ever used. Seems a lot sharper than my Canon 70-300mm L lens.
Really can't recommend that Sigma lens enough.
Also having a 600mm lens is something I still haven't got used to, its pretty special at airshows, just how close close you can get.
It seems to get you a lot of attention whenever you go out and about with it.
Weight isn't really a problem for me, I like my camera to feel big and heavy, so for me personally walking around with it is fine.
I normally hold it by the tripod ring, and don't bother with any strap (I don't trust the shoulder straps, and the camera neck strap gets in the way).
With the Sigma you get a free lens case which can be useful, and the dock allows you to make adjustments to the focusing etc. which is incredibly useful if your lens is front/ back focusing.

The SP 150-600mm G2 (Generation 2) ultra-telephoto lens with upgraded optical performance enables handheld shooting with remarkable definition. This new lens builds upon the success of the current SP 150-600mm (Model A011) which Tamron first introduced in December, 2013, including better overall optical performance and faster AF speed, VC enhancements, plus Fluorine Coating, FLEX ZOOM LOCK and tele converter.
Rebuilt from the ground up to meet Tamron’s strict quality standards and design specifications, this new zoom combines smart engineering and high performance with quality craftsmanship, durability and user friendliness.
Also includes 2 tele-converters that retain autofocus with the G2 lens.
Two exclusive tele converters, which match the optics of the new SP 150-600mm G2, offer 1.4x and 2.0x magnification, and provide a maximum zoom range up to 1200mm. These new tele converters extend focal length of the master lens, making it possible to take pictures in farther ultra-telephoto ranges.
