1D mk4 noise help please?

Postby HeyfordDave111 on Fri 16 Sep 2016, 8:00 am

Hi everyone,
I'm lucky enough to own a 1D mk4 , purchased a year ago.

It's a complicated camera but one that does reward the patient........so I've spent a fair bit of time getting used to it.

However, I find it rather noisy except in perfect sunny light conditions where I can use a low ISO. Anything above 200 ISO is painfully grainy, especially when using it for fast jets in the cad for instance, where I need to shoot 1000 shutter speed and using my Canon 100-400 'L'

Has anyone got one, or can suggest what might help?
If I use my 50D in the same location with the same lends I not have the problem, nor with my 6D but that has better range and more pixels.

Cheers
Dave

I've got a couple of these & their 'low-noise' high ISO performance is/was one of the most attractive of features in my choice of the 1D MkIV. The first one I bought nearly-new from a guy that took pic's at the Horse of the Year show in a darkened arena..& obviously without flash! Superb images out of the camera. Noise for me has never been an issue on these.
I did ask 'SFW' ( some of the finest Forum images posted IMO!) why he bought a 1DX to replace one of his MkIV bodies.... he stated "I can't trust the ISO on a MkIV above 10,000!!'
Clearly, this doesn't reflect your experience & sadly I don't have a magic fix. I'm reluctant to mention this, but...bearing in mind the ISO can be expanded to circa 102,000 & if a previous owner set an ISO that was actually 20,000 you should have mega-fast shutter speeds on that Lens. Maybe needs a visit to a specialist?

Perhaps if you can post some sample images for comparison with no post processing so we can see what you are up against ? Doesn't have to be aircraft any subject will do

Any update on this HD111? Really intrigued as to the problem with noise.
