Sigma 600mm v Nikon 300mm f4

Alright chaps, which one would you buy? Does the extra reach of the 600mm outweigh the Sharpness of the Nikon f4? Any advise would be most welcome.

Thats a hell of a difference in reach so you may not really be comparing like for like.

I own a 300mm f4 and last year I bought a Nikon 200-500mm to get a bit more reach due to the increasing display distances in the UK. The 200-500 is an excellent lens, especially for the money, but if I coudl only have one lens in my bag it would be the 300mm f4 which is my favourite lens.

I dont have any experience of the 600mm lens but if its reach you want then the 300mm coupled with a TC is a good combo and doesnt compromise sharpness to any noticeable degree.

Thanks for the input mate, I realise the difference in length make it a strange question.

To be honest I was ready to buy the Sigma 600mm but then saw some results with the Nikon and a 1.4 tc and they were that sharp it made me think twice.

Yes mate, I decided to go with sharpness over reach and went for the prime, to be honest its miles better than anything I've ever used, autofocus is very fast and pictures are pin sharp, the only thing i don't like is the sun protector on the end but that is a minor quibble really, I'm going to add a 1.4 converter for the airshow season as I've heard (Zig Zags reply and lots of other research) that there isn't much loss of sharpness, if any.

I've got the Nikon 300mm F4 and use it all the time with the 1.4 converter. I wouldn't be without it, much sharper than any images I have had with any of the bigger zooms I have tried.

I've got a Sigma 300/2.8 which I use with a 1.4 converter, works pretty well. Would love a Nikkor 300/2.8 of course (already have a Nikkor 1.4 converter which I use with an 80-200/2.8) but it's just out of the question.

Hopefully it will be sorted out soonest. I've used various Nikon cameras and lenses over many years (since 1976, gulp!) and touch wood (or knock on wood for any Americans out there) I've never had any problems with any of them.
