NIKKOR afs 600 1.4g plus a 200-500mm

Postby sopwithflyer on Tue 23 May 2017, 1:34 pm

Hi folks a colleague has one of these along with a Nikon 200-500 that she needs to sell. A sad story relates to them which I wont post here but if anyone is willing to give them a value, please pm me. I said I would ask for her.

Cheers

600 f1.4! You must mean f4 surely? You wouldn't be able to pick up a f1.4 that's if one was ever made!

Unless the typo is in the lens size....Nikon do an f1.4 60mm ( or 58mm to be precise )

The label on it reads. AF-S NIKKOR 600mm 1:4G ED. (she sent me a picture of the label that's where the 1.4 comes from) It has a 1.4 converter attached to it but what I have typed is what is on the lens label.

If it's one of these, then in new condition it looks to be the best part of £7000 - https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/new-equipment/new-photo-and-video/new-lenses/new-nikon-fit-lenses/nikon-af-s-600mm-f-4g-if-ed-vr/

Used one on eBay for £6000 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nikon-NIKKOR-AF-S-G-ED-VR-600-600mm-f-4-0-Lens-/222505153374?hash=item33ce57335e:g:aEcAAOSwZ4dZEaxi

Perhaps selling them to a specialist like MPB might be the best option, as you could be looking for a private buyer for quite some time at those prices?

eBay prices for the 200-500mm are around £800-950, and at MPB used examples are priced between £969 and £999.

A 600mm f4, then.
There were two versions, one with built-in image stabilisation & one without ( the non-IS one is the older model )
WEX have one of the non-IS ones for sale at £2600 : http://www.wexphotographic.com/af-s-nikkor-600mm-f4d-if-ed-used-1627962/

That says 1:4 D on the label though, so I assume it's the one I linked to last night which matches the description given by the OP.

Quite right.....definitely the 'VR' version, then.
As you posted, selling to a specialist retailer would be the best bet ( even though they'll offer less than the true value ) or at the least contact a few of them to see what they'd offer.

Yes, that's it; she has brought it in this morning. You are spot on. Could be a good deal here if anyone wants one quickly! happy to pass on her details to anyone who wants to discuss it with her, or please PM me if you want to know the history of it. She had googled it but was confused with various marks/numbers......

Thanks for all your help LN/BC

If your friend isn't in a big rush to dispose of the lenses, there's the option of selling them through a local camera shop ( if you have one ) or one of the on-line retailers on a commisson basis.
Failing that, given the nature of the lenses ( particularly the 600mm ) it may be worth joining one of the Nikon forums & advertising them on there.

I recently sold a lens on the Talk Photography forum. Deal was done within about 8 hours of posting the ad.

That said, I'd be dubious about selling something as expensive as these on a forum/eBay - I just think that you're bound to get time wasters that bid and never pay.

I think I'd get quotes from second hand retailers.

There are currently 5 used 200-500 lenses on their website ( SKU: 662475/660566/663172/663660/663151 ) ranging from £969 to £999
There are no used 600mm on there.

Being the cynic that I am, be interesting to see how much they advertise the two your friend just sold them for.

If the 600 is an f4 VR in excellent condition then I reckon it'll be advertised on their site for somewhere in the region of £5.5k. MPB have completely and utterly had her eyeballs out if they've only given her £3.2k for it. They've got a 500 f4 on there at the moment that looks pretty well used and doesn't come with a lens hood for £3799. I'm potentially in the market for one of these and would have paid her quite a bit more than £3.2k. Wish I'd seen this thread sooner.

Yeah, saw it earlier and was surprised at the price. Perhaps reflects the condition, there's some odd marking on the mount, never seen that before on a mount. Doubt it'll hang around long at that price.
