Flickr is by far the most popular but I'm not a fan. I use Google Photos you can see how they look at the link in my signature

Staggering how Photobucket seem determined to cut their own throat.

First it was degrading image quality massively, now it's removing third party links.

That's a masterclass in alienating your customer base.

I stopped using Photobox because of the level of advertising and it was such a crap site for navigating around.
They must be in a bind and maybe this is the beginning of the end for them.

Flickr isn't that bad, easier and simpler to use than Photobox and if all else fails, there is a Flickr course on Lynda.com that explains almost all about the site.

Baffled now. I use Photobox but never for image hosting, only for printing.

My Photobucket account seems OK at the moment. Flickr works fine as well, especially for larger images but I find it less user friendly, especially when using it for multiple images. I'm not ruling out muppetry on my part though.

I think you'll be OK until you hit your download quota Derek, I suspect that's what happened to me and its only when they then offer you paid subscription options that it becomes apparent that there's only the top option at several hundred dollars per annum that supports 3rd party linking.

I was getting frustrated by photo bucket anyway, it was a pain to do anything efficiently due to the adverts and pop-ups. Flickr seems much better as does the image quality. I'm not a fan of those text tails it leaves after each image in the thread but that's neither here nor there I suppose.

My advice is to start using flickr now, or you'll have the frustration of photobucket going pop on you, probably when you've just invested ages in uploading and posting something.

Its surprising just how much you build up over the years in a hosting account. Which in the case of my photobucket, is now just sitting there useless.

EDIT: just to make this even more awkward the meter showing how much bandwidth used/free didn't work on my photo bucket. So I'm just assuming that's what ran out.

I have a Plus20 account, whatever that means and I've been paying an annual fee for years now. I can't find out what my bandwidth usage or limits are either so I guess it's Flickr for me too. Still, I've only put 6000 images on Photobucket over the years.....

You can delete the Flickr text links if you want Nigel. Just remove them from the BB code that is provided.

Reduce this:

Code: Select all

[url=https://flic.kr/p/UB7ULs][img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4252/34527977474_23c566d1f3_o.jpg[/img][/url]

To just this portion from the middle:

Code: Select all

[img]https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4252/34527977474_23c566d1f3_o.jpg[/img]

Now that is a top tip. Thanks Dan :smile:

I've had a Photobucket account for years but got sick of the increasing amount of adverts on it, it was like wading through very thick glue trying to do anything on it so I installed ad-blocker.

It worked a treat until 2 days later (this was about 10 days ago) when they banned me from posting on forums and tried to hold me to ransom by telling me I had to pay a large subscription fee.

Have they just done this to members who use ad-blocker? I've only got about 1,000 photos on it.

I sometimes modify the provided BB Code so that the page you go to when the image is clicked is the photo within an album, rather than the generic photo page.
That way if someone clicks through, the arrows to either side of the photo move you through the album - makes it more likely that people will look at additional photos IMHO.

As provided:

Code: Select all

[url=https://flic.kr/p/UN48UA][img]https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4172/34651722686_eb0cc9ec29_b.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/UN48UA]Maude P-40E going past[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/errolgc/]Errol Cavit[/url], on Flickr

As modified (first https link modified)

Code: Select all

[quote][url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/errolgc/34651722686/in/album-72157680376572862/][img]https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4172/34651722686_eb0cc9ec29_b.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/UN48UA]Maude P-40E going past[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/errolgc/]Errol Cavit[/url], on Flickr[/quote]

Note that a photo on Flickr can be in multiple albums - being in a album(s) is a property of a photo, rather than PB's approach (as I understand it) of a photo being within a single album.

Yep. I've just received an email from them this morning to that effect. $399 per year is the price they are asking.

Yes I got the email too. I think I'll be OK until next June when my subscription runs out. I'll use the time to transfer my photos to Flickr.
This must be one the most ridiculous corporate decisions of recent times. Business users with many thousands of images will pay the fee but most won't. If they had said they'll charge $50 or maybe even $100 then I would have thought about paying but $400 is a bit steep.

My thoughts exactly. Unfortunately there is no monthly subscription option either, its all or nothing. I had planned on paying for a month or so while I transferred my pics and updated all my 3rd party links but that isn't going to happen.

The 'download album' facility doesn't seem to be working either. Or maybe this isn't part of the free subscription, however I can't find confirmation of that on the site anywhere.

Silly, silly money - and I laugh at anyone that has been daft enough to pay the "ransome" money.

Just open a Flickr account and download your photos.

Who on earth would pay £400 for something you can get for free elsewhere?

I've not used PB in years.

With these charges, they'll be bust within a year.

Dan, there ARE people that have paid the money - at least one member has admitted to it already.

How sad is that? :grin:

Stopped using Pbkt years ago. It wasn't only the ads, but the constant changing around to uploading, that seemed to happen every 3 months . I went on to tinypic, which I believe is owned by Pbkt, but in the last month or so I've had no end of bother with that, and it will no longer let me upload. I'm currently using Postimage, which seems to be working OK, apart from a snag a couple of weeks ago that lasted a day.
"Nice pics mate" comments only! No criticism please.

I know someone who paid the extra to get rid off the ads, but I think they said they were affected by this as well, and they are now being asked to cough up the $399

You can get rid of the adverts on all sites by installing adblock.

Simples !
