Struggling with the 7Dmk2

Post by timuss »

I've had my 7D2 since December and all seemed ok took it on holiday in February no problems. However since using it from May onwards for airshows i've really struggled with the quality of images the camera is producing they just seem noisy? I've just not been the pleased with the iamge quality that the camera is producing maybe its just me, but before i send it to Canon just for a check up i would really appreciate your opinion.

All the attached images are converted straight to jpeg through camera raw with all settings turned down etc..

You don't specify if your 'holiday' was aviation orientated, or if since May you've only shot at Air-shows? What I'm wondering is... have you used the same lens on those occasions & have these shots been savaged by post-processing?
On first inspection the focus seems patchy & I couldn't find the Exif data?..so not easy to assist.

I don't think they are that bad,

Image one you are a bit underside and late may sun is harsh plus only 1/400th shutter( Recomend 1/1000th)

Image 2,Again harsh Light and perhaps a lot of heat haze ? Quite a slow shutter again also.

Image 3 you shot at 1/80th, Always going to be tricky unless you have a amazing panning technique.

Noise look ok to me,

I would try it again now the sun light is getting softer.

Mark.

Yep, in terms of noise, can't see anything wrong with them, unless you are pixel peeping perhaps?

Like the other poster has said, image 1 is clear and sharp, nothing wrong with it apart from the harsh position of the sun. Image 2 seems like there's a lot of heat haze from the MiG's engine, and image 3 is a slow shutter speed which is always difficult.

Maybe that's what it is certainly helps to get someone else's perspective for sure.

Noting that you have exposure compensation dialled in. The second image in particular seems over-exposed and dialling in +1 stop would definitely do that, the light being what it is there. I find evaluative metering on my 7DII is pretty good, I don't have to interfere much. Only harsh backlight and the like really.

That third image is pretty sharp considering the shutter speed and motion!

Yep, I upgraded to a 7D Mark II at the start of the year and evaluative metering on it is most often spot on. It also handles high ISO very very well.

I have found the noise on the 7dmk2 to be greater than my 5dmk2 and 5DS. It is 'seems' more noticeable but that's in the RAW files. One processed they are Ok but for me the 7d mk 2 RAW files have needed more work PP than others.
