Wide angle lens suggestions

Wide angle lens suggestions

Postby Canon on Sun 11 Mar 2018, 8:11 pm

I'm currently in the market for a new Wide angle lens for my Canon 80D.
At the moment I am trying to choose between the Canon 24-105mm version 1, the Sigma 24-105mm and the Canon 24-70mm f4.
I have a tight budget, so will most likely have to buy second hand. What are anyone's thoughts on the lenses mentioned? And where would you recommend buying second hand lenses from?

I have a 24-70 F4 and I love it, it's quite a bit more compact that the 24-105s. I think though that on an 80D 24mm is not very wide at all and ef-s lenses are often better suited. The 15-85 for instance is excellent, though strangely expensive nowadays.

I'd go for the 15-85, if possible. On a crop sensor the 15-85 will give a similar wide angle field of view that the 24-105 does on a full frame sensor.

I have the 24-105 F/4 L, used on both a 70d and a 5d3.

It's a great lens, however it can be a little soft at both ends of the range.

The other thing I would say, is that 24mm isn't that wide on an APS-C body, giving you 38mm - 168mm (if my calculations are correct!!)

Have you considered looking at something like the Canon 17-40 F4 L lens if you really want that wider aspect?

The definition of a wide angle lens is when the focal length of the lens is shorter than the short side of the sensor.

Indeed, as previous posters have said, 24 mm on a crop sensor camera isn't particularly wide.

I have the 24-105L and I like it very much, but I also have the 10-22 EF-S, for true wide-angle stuff. Its the only none L-series lens I use these days and it isn't shown up too badly. I've had it years, it does what I need it to and its very cheap compared to the far superior but quite pricey 17-40L.

No softness at the either end of my 24-105 by the way. I'm sure the resolution of the mark 2 is better, but I have no real inclination to upgrade at the moment, certainly not while I'm on a crop sensor camera (7DII).

i've got a Tokina 11-16 for my Nikon 7200D, really pleased with it. Not the cheapest option out there, but image quality is great.

i got it from Wex who do good second hand deals, also a site called MPB is meant to be good for second hand kit

Must admit that I don't take too many wide angle shots, but my Sigma DC 18-50mm 2.8 EX Macro HSM is perfectly adequate when I do.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
Maybe I should clarify, when I said 'wide angle', i didn't mean anything really wide angle, I meant something wide enough for cities or statics at airshows or for the paddock at motor racing events. Hence why I was thinking something that starts at around the 24mm range. I also want it to cover a small amount of zoom to bridge the gap between that and my 70-300mm L lens, so that I don't have to carry round loads of lenses when travelling. However I am fed up of the poor quality of my Sigma 18-300mm, so it is more something to replace that.

Has anyone tried the non-L lens version of the 24-105 by Canon? If so what do they think of it?
The 15-85mm is also tempting if i can find one cheap enough.
If anyone owns either of the mentioned lenses, would you mind posting 1 or 2 sample shots, so that i can get an idea of quality?

Cheers,
James

This was from my 15-85, it has been sharpened, but as you can see the image quality is pretty good.

I own a 17-40L which I have used with my 'old' Canon 40D for quite a few years and regularly use it with my Canon 6D. It produces excellent images when mounted on either camera and is ruggedly built. At airshows, I attach it to the 40D and have my 100-400 on the 6D so that I do not need change lenses out in the field. It is a modestly-priced L-series (about A$850) but it does not have IS. This is not a problem; you'd need to be drunk and riding a monocycle to produce blurred images.

The choice of lens is the single most important piece of camera equipment, so buy the best that you can afford.

I use the 24-105mm L lens, good piece of kit although expensive, two lenses in my bag covering 24mm to 400mm with a full frame sensor.

Thanks for all the replies.

Been looking through online reviews and found two lenses that seem interesting.
Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD
and
Sigma F2.8-4 Contemporary DC Macro OS HSM 17-70mm

anyone had any experience with either of these lenses?
From how I interpret DXO mark graphs, they seem to be fairly solid performers (edge to edge sharpness) throughout there ranges (or at least much better than my current standard/ wide angle lens)

Thanks,
James

Another vote for the 15-85 from me. Stopped to f8 it's as sweet as. Little bit of corner vignetting in low light but nothing that can't be simply sorted in post.

On Canon APS-C, I would take the 10-18mm F4, not too expensive and a great lens.

I'm using the 11-22mm on a Eos M3 (nice and small for the static)

Both ultrawides, but it really depends what you need, for airshows, I love the ultrawides on the static. I don't have to step back, don't have to wait for people, I just move in and shoot.

But that's just me and APS-C.... full frame... Sigma seems quite good but no experience with it so can't tell :-)
