Increased Noise

Post by ted633 »

Just finished sorting my photos from Old Warden, and have noticed that all of my shots of the Typhoon are quite grainy / noisy. I pushed the ISO up to 400 to get faster shutter speeds, but I know that isn't enough to cause a problem. The only difference between these photos and ones taken last year when I was shooting at a much higher ISO and they were fine(800 at Fairford), is that the aperture this time was fairly narrow (F11-13). Does having a reduced aperture in these situations increase noise, or have I got an issue somewhere. Using a 70D + Sigma 150-600C.

Were you using auto-ISO or have excessive exp comp dialled in?

Manually had the ISO set to 400. Using programmed auto, so wasn't dictating any other settings. Exp. comp was set to 0

Might be useful to post an example shot. Maybe you are pixel peeping or over sharpening?

Could the difference perhaps be natural, i.e. atmospheric haze, possibly accentated by the smaller aperture, rather than camera noise?

The light was harsh and quite "contrasty" at the time of the Typhoon display (and after for a while). My guess FWIW is that it's down to the light.

There was no need to be up at ISO400 either which would have exacerbated the issue from the light at the time. In those conditions you should be using ISO200 as an absolute maximum.

My shots came out a little underexposed of the Typhoon, shot at ISO160 and I managed to maintain 1/800 - 1/1000 for the duration of its display.

Dropped back down to ISO100 for the rest of the day with +1/3EV.

Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like it may have just been finger-trouble on my end. Will make a note of not pushing the ISO up to bright conditions, this is how we all learn!
Thanks again

The 70D does have a reputation for noise.
