AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR

Postby Vixen1 on Mon 14 Jan 2019, 1:33 pm

Has anyone tried the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR lens yet.

I have the NIKKOR AFS70-300/4.5-5.6G IF VR ED which is 10 years old now and is back at Nikon for the second time this year for repair. It was always been very sharp and reliable but it may now be at the end of it's useful life.

I am a little reluctant to swap as the new lens will only work on one of my three bodies and secondly, the new one seems very cheap compared to what I paid for the current one. I have a D7100, D7000 and D300.

Your thoughts would be helpful.

Seems unusual. In my experience Nikkor lenses are virtually bullet-proof.

I thought that too. It's had a lot of use, I'm not sure that it was fixed properly first time.

Have you considered the AF-P FX instead? Better build quality, more compatible. Fair bit more dosh, sadly.

Thanks for coming back to me. Yes, I've come to conclusion from research and advice that this is the best option.

I've now got my current lens back from Nikon and they have replaced loads of parts, given this was free under warranty from the first repair, I'm really pleased with the end result given that I only paid for a minor repair in the first place. Great service from Nikon though.

If it works at the standard I want again, there is no problem, however, if I still have problems then it will be a new AF-P FX.

Thanks for your help.

Hello.

I am also trying to replace my faithfull 70-300/4.5-5.6G IF VR ED that drowned last summer, but it seems to be unavailable or excessively priced (I bought it new for ~400 EUR 10 years ago, in the US).
The 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G AF-P VR is tempting, but:
- it has a plastic mount, which seems fragile, according to some buyer's experiences
- I loose 1 stop
- vignetting @300 mm seems higher
- there are no MF nor VR switches => these modes are to be activated from the body. My D7200 (and future D3400) are compatible, but I don't find this as handy as the previous switches. Nikon advertises the avoidance of unwanted switch flip when handling the lens, but it's more a "when you can fix it, feature it" approach to me.
- there is no explicit "VR Active" mode, for panning shots, which are 90% of my use. It seems that the lens are now clever enough to detect automatically the panning, but I am not too confident.

Any advice to confirm my worries and consider other alternatives ?

Why not just buy a good used example of the AF-S?

You're right. I spotted some ~300 EUR priced samples on non photo-dedicated websites, but I have never bought second-hand stuff, so I am not too much confident.

On the other hand, I have a 160 EUR credit on FNAC shop (french equivalent of B&H), and I was expecting that this would enable me to advantagely replace my lost lens with a even better (updated) version. So my disapointment.

You can buy used with confidence from a place like MPB:

You don't even need an "Excellent" condition example, just a "Good" one is fine.

Thanks a lot !
Most interesting site, and prices are quite honest.
I think I will find what I am looking for here. For the 20 EUR difference, I think I will even go for an "excellent" sample.

I've use MPB quite a lot and can say they're brilliant, but be aware they only give 6 months warranty.

Camerajungle(owned by Jessops) are also very reliable, but the prices are higher, probably due to their 12 month warranty.
