Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom - complete
Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom - complete
Now that I'm done with the GB, next on the bench is this thing of beauty. The plan is to build it as it comes out of the box.
Looks like fun.

Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
I've got this one in my stash Derek... I have heard nothing but good news about the build. I'll be watching your build with a lot of interest.
Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
A small update.
This is the lower wing and the engine intake /exhaust. The main landing gear bays are also built and the legs in position.
The cockpit assembly attached to the nose gear bay.
I used the Eduard cockpit set but the fit of the whole assembly in the fuseage isn't too great. The Eduard parts are suppposed to be self-adhesive but they need a bit of help. Look good though.
With the seats temporarily installed.
The front fuselage attached to the lower wing.
The fun starts when I try and fit the beautifully moulded upper fuselage.
So far, lovely kit with excellent fit.

Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
As it happened, the fuselage fitted nicely with no filler required.
Starting to look like a Phantom now with the tail cone, radome and intakes added. All fitted rather nicely.
Lots of other bits to be added still.

Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
This looks massive compared to the 1/144s you've been building recently. I imagine it's quite nice having some larger parts to play with
Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
Yes and no. The big bits help but the detail on some parts is very fine. The Eduard set had a tiny lever to be installed on the instrument panel. I couldn't even pick it up with the smallest and pointiest tweezers I had.
So far , a thoroughly enjoyable kit to put together. Might change my mind when I start decaling with all those stencils though.....

Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
Nice. I presume the hole in the upper fuselage is the AAR receptacle for USAF versions??
You caaan't trust the system... Maaan!
Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
I think Academy are planning lots of versions as there are lots and lots of spares in the box. I'm guessing there are F-4C, F-4D and maybe F-4N and F-4J bits as well. I've never seen so much of a kit left. I'll post a picture when it's done.

Ready for a coat of white paint. Sadly I need to do my spraying outside and it's dark and windy now. I might need to wait until the weekend.

Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
Looks fantastic Derek. I have the B, D and 2 J's in the stash, all Eduard kits. Looking at this it makes me want to get on with one of mine!
Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
Do it JamesV. It's a great kit. So far the only issue I've had is when trying to use Eduard's self adhesive cockpit parts but apart from that the fit and assembly is very good. Most enjoyable so far. I'm thinking of this as a practise for my acquisition of a Tamiya 1/48 F-14A in the near future.

Watching with interest, Derek.
An LN F-4D with the Academy kit is on my to do list

Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
Latest update.
The white sprayed undersides. Helped massively by the white plastic.
A few coats of Xtracrylix Light Gull Grey.
Realized I'd cocked up the scheme. The flaps and aileron top surfaces should be white as well.
The rest of the bits waiting to be attached, most after decal placement.
The nearly finished cockpit area.
Ready for decals.
It'll be towards the end of the week until I get the decalling done.

Looking great!
Will have to dig one out soon as you said. The Tamiya Tomcat looks sublime but have you seen the AmK one?

Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
I usually find with the self adhesive stuff a dab of superglue is still as well. That is a great looking model though, the etch really brings modern cockpits to life. I'm yet to build a Phantom but this seems a good place to start.
Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
Yes, I used a bit of superglue but it seemed to struggle with the metal surfaces.
Jamesv, yes I saw the AMK F-14 but to be honest, it's the VF-2 markings that I'm attracted to - reminds me of an Airfix 1/72 F-14A I built a long time ago.
A wee update - as expected the decals took a while but the sheet is nicely laid out and the decals are roughly numerical order so if you follow the order, it goes, left, right, top then finally undersides. Anyway, some photos.
After one night of decalling.
After the second session.
And finally
As expected, the only problem was the fin logo but they've settled now. There were some numbered decals which totally eluded me but I have put most of the stencils on.
A few bits of touch up and attachment of canopies and weapons left to go. I'm debating whether to give it a satin or flat finish.

Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
That's looking superb! I think the real thing was generally more satin, but then that doesn't always quite come out to scale so it may well be a takes your choice job. It's a great looking scheme though!
Re: Academy 1/48 F-4B Phantom
Now done. A thoroughly enjoyable build. I finished it in Revell Acrylic clear matt which still has a bit of a sheen to it.
