God Is My Co-Pilot

A war film that doesn't seem to get the recognition that it deserves, God Is My Co-Pilot is based on the wartime memoirs of Robert Lee Scott, a pilot who flew combat sorties with the famed "Flying Tigers" in China.

The film makes great use of the P-40 in its various combat scenes, but it fell to the good old North American AT-6 Texan to play the Japanese fighter contingent once again!

Veteran generic Asian character actor Richard Loo played Scott's fictional nemesis, "Tokyo Joe".

So, to add to my burgeoning collection of movie star warbirds, I thought I would do one of these aircraft!

I used this kit as a basis - my first HobbyBoss 1/72 kit:

The planes in the film seem to be virtually unmodified, save for masking out the rear cockpit to make the Texan appear as a single-seater.

So, some quick progress on the Texan in the space of a couple of hours:

Well, that was quick!

There's a sequence in the film where a couple of the "Zeros" drop bombs onto the Flying Tigers' airfield. If I had some suitable bombs for it, I'd have stuck them on. Sadly not!

Anyway, it was fun building "Tokyo Joe"'s Zero. Next up is a "proper" replica Zero.... ;-)
