Air Race One - Tunisia

Post by Lloyd H »

Back in May I was asked if I'd like to go out to Tunisia to cover the Air Race One debut in North Africa for FLYER magazine in June, naturally the choice of location had me thinking for a few days, rightly so really as we all know what happened there a few weeks later. However the locals could not have been any friendlier at the hotel and Monastir airport, security was mega tight given the attack at the start of the year etc but I think the locals there really enjoyed the Air Race. I believe they'll be going back next year as well.
It was a really hard event to shoot, the best pylons were out in the rice paddies so we had to settle for ones in the boundary of the airport. The other major problem was the heat haze, it was 30º most days meaning that any long distance shots were a no go, they needed to be filling the frame at 300mm for the heat haze to be relatively un-noticeable.

Anyway on with the shots..

A beautiful set of pictures Lloyd.
I know Des Hart (G-BOMB) and it takes a lot to make him look presentable and you have managed that quite well!

That close up of number 53 is really good, it's a good portrait of the racer at work.. Interesting to see the undercarriage strut taped up to reduce drag in one pictures and two Go-Pros in another, so much for reducing drag!

All those sessions up on the Welsh mountainsides have paid off with these fast movers.

You can really go off some people Wallace ;-)

For racing we tape the heck out of the aircraft to gain every mph possible, the Go-Pros in the photos your seeing were fitted by the TV crew after the heat races were done for the day, they asked us to go out and get some good footage around the course which we had great pleasure in doing!

I edited some of my on board stuff into a little video which you can see below, we get quite close to the ground at some points!:

(given up trying to embed it!) Mods feel free to do so!
