Yeovilton Air Day 2012 - 23rd June

With apologies for a post from a bit of a lurker (and father of two looking forward to tomorrow), I've no insider knowledge on times other than the publicly-available info that the Reds display is 1130-1151 before they depart at 1350 for a flypast at RAF Marham.

And for a Yeovilton Air Day first timer, any advice on where to base ourselves (me plus two under 8s with ear defenders) for a good view of displays and the CA finale would be much appreciated.

Get in early and run towards the far end past the statics, you'll come to a grass area, plonk yourself there. It's usually crowded but with the less than perfect weather forecast and line up that isn't as good as previous years it may be quieter.

I deleted the (incorrect) timings for Cosford airshow after a direct request from the organising team.

Head for the point where the two runways cross, I can't quite tell from the map but you enter the airfield roughly amongst the block of buildings in the centre.

I dropped by the airfield to see a couple of items earlier. The An-124 was superb - the routine featured a full, tight 360 degree turn, showing a full topside. And the final pass was a wing-waggle.

Agreed, was brilliant to see. The meteor and sea fury were the other 2 stand out displays for me.....low and fast arcing passes....superb

Yes - I'd go as far to say that the Meteor display was the finest classic jet display I've seen in a long, long time.

Is it just me or do the saudi hawks just leave anyone else cold? Great to see them, just need to polish the display a little?

Did the French NH90 cancel? as I couldn't find it.

Funny how the rain started just as the Hawk went up lol apparently the weather at home was pretty horrible all day and I only live 45 minutes away so I think we quite lucky with the tiny bit of rain we had.

Anyone else spot the RAF Phantom they put on display near the Saudi Hercules, was quite surprised to see that

They did indeed, suprise suprise...

Also the French NH90 cancelled yesterday.

Sounds like it was a good show from what ive heard, considering the cancellations theyve suffered.

Arir Day 2012 was a totally different beast compared to last year which was a corker in the fast jet department, difficult to live upto and I'm afraid it didn't quite do so (in my opinion) despite the highlights of GR4 role demo, Red Arrows, Meteor T7 and Gerald Cooper flinging his 300 around like a crazy man. Cancellations abounded, with nothing said at the show of the Red Star Rebels debut not happening (anyone know why?), Rafale, Sea Vixen and Vulcan (last two both due to accidents so outside of anyones control). Not sure if these and/or the weather (cool and grey but no rain) suppressed numbers of people attending. Also of note was the considerable competition from other shows on the same day, Lowestoft, Marham, (families day) and Florennes really drained some of the choice fast jets out of the day (not just flying but statics too were really thin on the ground) , stalwarts of Yeovilton such as the Belgian and Dutch F16s both missing. Royal Navy though deserve a massive pat of the back for putting in so much effort to the finale and the historic flight items but who chose 23rd June as the best day? Is this all down to the Olympics!!!!

Crazyhorse11 confirmed my fears after standing in the sheep field all day yesterday and not seeing a single arrival until the Saudi Hawks turned up at 1310! In previous years, arrivals start drifting in from 0900 onwards, but the only movement during the morning was the Commando assault demo practice! Because of the cancellations and low numbers of arrivals for the static, decided to give the show a miss today and save my pixels for Legends and RIAT!
