2018 Yeovilton Air Day

Pah, old hat anyway, seen them before. I think the L-39 doubled up last time it was over and combined RIAT and Culdrose or similar.

As for Mi8MTV-1s, IIRC the Lithuanian, Latvian, Croatian, Moldovan and one of the Macedonians at Co-operative Key in 2003 were all designated that, alternatively I could be making it all up. It was very good though.

Strange that those countries helicopters use the Russian designation Mi-8MTV-1, as it's essentially the same helicopter as the export Mi-17-1V.

Maybe they were bought 'off the shelf' so to speak? :dunno:

On further research I found that former Warsaw Pact countries used to use the Russian designation, whereas countries outside the Warsaw Pact (such as India) used the export designation. Though why they were using the Russian designation even after the fall of the USSR is anyone's guess.

Russian aircraft are a nightmare to determine designations for variants, sub variants, and one-offs with the Mi-8 being one of the worst!

Anyway, I think this thread has gone off on a bit of a tangent....

Maybe we'll see two flying Sea Furies next year - well, one T.20 and the ISS Fury G-CBEL?
An Admirals Barge Hawker Hunter too?

I do wonder if there will be an arrivals day this year, my instincts would suggest not.

I know airshows and events don't have a "duty" to provide the service to enthusiasts, but when a show goes to such lengths to stop people viewing off base during the arrival days, it really doesn't seem fair that they don't provide a decent alternative.

I struggle to believe that there's no way to provide a RIAT style park and view, to limited numbers, at the 27 end, for the entire day, rather than the five hour period in the current format.

I have to agree. There is a very easy off base solution that could be made available namely the car park area used prior to the arrivals day. Whilst not absolutely ideal, it could provide 90% of the requirements and would only require marshalling, portaloos and some form of food outlet.

Not since they left North Weald that I'm aware of.

A pair of Tempest IIs, a Tempest V, a Buchon and a Mk.Vc Spitfire from Biggin Hill, according to G-INFO. What a shame they left North Weald.

No sign of that P-47 that was on the rumour mill last summer though.
