Getting there

Getting there

Postby vulcan57 on Sun 10 Apr 2011, 12:45 pm

Just looked at the official website, but very little info on there just yet. Still early. I am toying with the idea of attending another UK show this year and have never been to Scotland so was thinking of going to Leuchars. I don't drive so rely on public transport, so are there shuttle buses or the like from, say, Dundee? Also would Dundee be the nearest airport? or would you fly to Edinburgh and get train or something? Any info would be most welcome.

I don't recall there being buses laid on except from the P&R sites however there's a regular train service into Leuchars from both north and south of the base which will leave you a little walk to the base from the station (just over half mile to the main gate).

We stayed at the Travelodge in Dundee last year and got the train. The trains run every 30 mins after the show.

Train tickets were around £7 return from memory and its only about 15 mins train ride.

We drove up from South Lincs, Dundee airport would be closest but its not service by many locations...

Also stayed at the Travelodge in Dundee last year and got the train. Having done it by car and it has taken up to 9pm to get back to Dundee in the past we used the train last year. We got back to the Travelodge by 6pm.The trains South after the show had longer cues than the trains running to the North and its about a 10min walk from the Lodge. The car park at the show cost £20 so a saving on fuel as well. As you have no car then the train station in Dundee is next to the town and only a short work from any of the hotels but you will need to book early as most book up.

Regular bus service from Dundee bus station (99 and 96). Best to get bus before 8am, so that you avoid the traffic queues. After the show, walk down to Guardbridge and get bus before it reaches the crowds, that way you get a seat. A lot less hassle than the train and only takes about 5 mins longer(99 only, 96 goes via Tayport and takes an extra 10-15 mins).

Don't know where you are flying from, Dundee has services from London City (CityJet Fokker 50), and Birmingham (Flybe Saab 340). Edinburgh has services from more places, but you then need to get from airport to bus/train station.

Had this e-mail arrive through the UKAR website today from a Mr Gerald F. Rivett:

Subject:
Special Train to RAF Leuchars Airshow

Message:
Following the constant problems of gridlocked roads and over crowded ScotRail Trains I have decided to run a special train called the Ayr2Airshow Express direct to the RAF Leuchars Airshow on 10 September 2011. This can be viewed on our WhestRail website on www.whestrail.co.uk
The train will operate from Ayr and pick up en route to the Event.

Hey chap! How you doing?
London City is back to Dornier(Loganair) as of Monday but dont know for how long. Dont forget about the Belfast route as well!

Vulcan57,
If Edinburgh is your base there are very good bus services run by Lothian Buses from the airport to the city centre.

Well,I'm going to sit in gridlocked roads as I've at long last got my 2nd set of wheels! And this time I'm determined not to be hit head on by a B*@@DY teenage boy racer as was the case a week before Leuchars 2000! Still made it though, but had to go by train.....my girlfriend at the time wasn't too pleased with the overcrowding!
Planes?,PLANES?!! WE'VE got plenty of planes!
