Hi,

I have never been to the arrivals at Leuchars before and with the future in doubt, now is as good a time as ever.

If I were to head up early, what day is best? Is it only the Friday they arrive? What time do they arrive? Where is best to see them? And, what is the accomodation situation on Friday night?

Usually start on the Thursday, certainly the US Heavies normally arrive then!

Arrivals can happen at any time - those on the Enthusiast package may be given a timetable on the Friday for those arrivals (and if we're lucky they'll post it here! ) but other than that, there's no information given out on times for anything.

A lot of the closest accomodation goes fairly early although there's always something to be had somewhere. If you can't get anything local, try over in Dundee and use the train over to Leuchars - not expensive at all and only a few minutes walk from the base.

I am arriving on friday and might be around to catch a few arrivals, but as i have never had the opportunity to get to a show a day early i would love to know if there was anything flying in on the friday.

I would almost trade a B-52 approach and landing for the rest of the show.

There willl be but you wont' know who until nearer the time. Most of the RAF stuff arrives on the Friday, PdF did last year also I believe (I missed them...) plus you'll also get some practice displays.

Sweet, if i could get over earlier i would love to see the BUFF but the practices should make up for it.
Do they GR4's still do the paired scramble and return at full pelt.

That was amazing at the past shows.

No as there's no GR4s there

Might see a Typhoon scramble on the day but the GR4's from Lossie on Role Demo duty will likely fly down and straight into the Demo as they did last year.

Interesting to see what they'll do as part of the 1 Squadron standup...

I didn't know the GR4's were gone shows how long it has been since I was there, and my limited knowledge of the RAF .
I am still very much a newbie.

So is leuchars still home to an OCU but now for the typhoon ?
And did the GR4's move to Lossiemouth ?

The last time I was there there wet still nimrods operating , I need to to do some catch up.

Don't remember GR4's being based there but then I could be wrong... There used to be F3 squadrons (43 Squadron, 56(R) Squadron OCU and 111 Squadron). 56(R) was merged into 43 who then disbanded. 6 Squadron stood up with Typhoons before 111 Squadron disbanded (the last F3 squadron in the RAF). 1 Squadron will stand up with Typhoons at Leuchars in September with the ceremony happening at the show itself.

Lossiemouth still has three GR4 squadrons - 12 Squadron, 15(R) Squadron OCU and 617 Squadron.

Must have thought the Lossiemouth ones were based there.

At least there's a chance of seeing some multi ship scrambles

Last time I saw anything of a scramble at Leuchars was at an airshow when Phantoms were the choice of equipment! And the QRA sheds were there at the time! All you will get at arrivals is just what has previously been quoted. They did send 4 Typhoons up in quick succession last year which was a great sight,but that's part of the sunset ceremony closing scream-past which does catch a lot of folks out!

The 'Role Demo' a couple of years back saw a couple if Tiffies scream out and not come back until very late in the day - and that was it...

I tend to hang back until they definitely have screamed past me! Camera ready too!

I take it B-52s arrive tomorrow 13th, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon,
does anybody know times roughly, i know one in the afternoon is coming from jersey airshow

If the B52's are arriving tomorrow,I'll miss them coming in as I have to wait in for a joiner However I will follow them on the scanners,definitely will be up in St Andrews on Friday though.I'll post a wee word about the weather on the weather thread!

Smart stuff! I like the T'shirt. Can't miss a fellow UKAR forum member then! Too late for me though,but not for future shows,,all you do is spot the guy who'd look well out of place in a trendy nightclub but would be hard to spot at an Iron Maiden or Saxon concert!
