STV reported last night that it was the 'last Leuchars Airshow', although I think their info is bogus. The offical line, at least as far as I am aware, is that no decision has yet been taken on whether or not there will be an airshow next year.

One slightly gloomy portent which I did note from the programme: it normally has a 'Next year's show is provisionally arranged to take place on [Date x]', but there was no such date for 2013 printed in this year's programme, not even a heavily-caveated provisional date. I don't want to read too much into this until we have had a clear steer from the powers that be, but that's not too promising a kick-off.

Posting comments on an aviation-related chatroom, are ya? Looks like it an' all...

The hotelier where we stayed let us know that their neighbour has been brought in to take over the show from next year (obviously pending confirmation from "on high") and was shadowing this year's organiser(s). If someone new's being brought in then they must have a reasonable amount of confidence there.

Ask Liam Fox he was the Defence Minister who made the decision.

I spoke to the KC10A crew, they said they made a special effort to come over because they were told it was the last show!

I hope this is not true. However I'm resigned to the fact that I maybe looking to go south for next year.

Was talking to the a few of the folks who run the enthusiasts area over the course of the weekend and they seemed to be under the impression that it would be going ahead next year.

lets us all be patient, and see what develops, i understand since its a royal air force show, a written report from the base boss has to got to raf command hq and they advise on that

Anyone else visit the 6 sqdn tent near the flight line and notice they were selling shirts with the logo " 6 sqdn RAF Leuchars detatchment 2010 - 2013" on them? Wish I had bought one now.

I have been to Waddington twice in 4 years and hell yea there show is miles better to what Leuchars have offered in the same period. We camp in Barn farm where the display's fly right over head £70 for 4 nights stay in a tent do not even have to pay tickets to get in as can see everything from the farm.

If they are arriving from the road then you pay £10 to get into the viewing area where you are parked right up next to the runway.

The show itself is well organised and it is a great day out only time anything affects there display schedule is the weather.

I did see that. The impression I got, not just from these t-shirts I should add, was that Leuchars as an RAF base is finished. The official line was "We are planning on an airshow for 2013". Considering 2013 is only 4 months away you'd imagine plans are well advanced for the removal of the RAF. And you know what it's like from a domestic point of view - if you're moving house, you're not likely to put on a barbecue!

I think the fact that 40,000 people turned out and saw a wide range of entertainment shows just how valued an institution the Leuchars airshow is by the public. Would be a real loss to have it a Tankfest...

No reason why it can't still host an airshow - the runwayand apron facilities will be maintained so they could easily hold one there after handover

Are they definitely going to be maintained? But even if they are, you're looking at all the work done by RAF personnel, which I can't see being done by the army. If it was Army Air Corps perhaps, but not the troops that'll be arriving.

Two things will contribute to next year.

1.Cost

2.Army are not as open as the RAF.

The cost part how much did it cost Leuchars to host the show this year and have all the military hardware on show. Not cheap put it that way.

Would the Army let 40,000 + walk into there base not a chance. If there is to be a show next year I doubt people will be allowed on base as there will be alot of WIP.Nothing to stop them having fly through displays though the question is where to you put the crowds that would want to come.
