Shuttleworth Uncovered Airshow

Shuttleworth uncovered airshow on 22nd Sept will hopefully bring together 5 Sopwith types to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Sopwith Aviation company. The Collections Pup and Triplane should be joined by the TVAL Snipe and the Brooklands Museum 130Hp Clerget powered Camel and Tabloid project being built by Steve Green.

I was considering going, but flying doesn't start until 4pm, which is a bit late considering it's the end of September and light will be fading?

That depends on the clouds, if their is some sun then the light could be great, fingers crossed!

Light will be a bit of a gamble but forecast looks ok at the moment (not great, but ok) if we get the sun going down behind the crowd without a bank of cloud in the way the light could be wonderful. I'll have a last look at the forecast in the morning, toss a coin and probably come anyway. I really want to see the Albatros and RE.8 fly before they are consigned to the museum.

Is the Albatros & Re.8 flying tomorrow?. They were only due to give two displays which they have now done.

The Re.8 is still at Duxford at the moment but subject to all sorts of things, it's due to fly out tomorrow morning.

It says
See the amazing RE.8 & Albatros WW1 replicas.
there is no 'flying' in that sentence and if the RE.8 doesn't leave Duxford tomorrow then you'll have to make do with just the Albatros.

There doesn't need to be, everything in that list is scheduled to fly unless it says 'paddock'. That's how I read it anyway.

That's how I read it too - hope we are right. Weather forecast getting slightly worse 'sunny intervals' by the time the display starts.
Perhaps the best shots of the Albatros will be as it flies in from Duxford earlier in the day?

The Albatros is already at OW, It's the Re.8 that's at Duxford.

Brian,

When you say subject to "all sorts of things", what do you mean by this? Is it technical problems plus weather considerations, lack of a pilot or something along those lines?

Could you enlighten us a bit more please.

Well in view of the excellent weather forecast for Saturday and the last chance to see thE RE.8 and Albatros fly, I decided to go...and wasn't disappointed.
The weather couldn't have been better and I was surprised to find half the collection parked in the public area and accessible for all. There was the unique line-up of five Sopwith types as planned, including the RAF Museum's Snipe which also will never be seen again outside. My concerns about the flying display not starting until 4pm were unfounded, as some of the Shuttleworth pilots used this event to keep their hours in on various types which took to the air during the day including the ANEC II, Southern Martlet, Polikarpov Po-2, Fieseler Storch, Magister and others. Indeed the light was just perfect when the RE.8 and Albatros flew with the Bristol Fighter and SE-5A, but just after they landed at about 5.30pm it failed and I decided to leave, so not sure if anything flew after that, but I suspect Peter Teichmann in his P-51D Mustang did, as he brought it in during the day.
Well done Shuttleworth - I loved this event!

Peter Teichman did indeed fly, and there was a hot air balloon from elsewhere too behind the crowd. Then the Avro Triplane and Bristol Boxkite brought up the end of the show. After the display I spent some time filming the aeroplanes being 'put to bed' and watched the Boxkite being flown again, I believe by a pilot who was converting to type.

As you say a most enjoyable afternoon in perfect weather, by far the best show of the year. One of the things I noticed that the Model T Ford conversion to Hucks Starter was done by de Havilland. Does anyone know when?
