Best of British Evening Airshow - 18th July

Postby WG655 on Fri 29 May 2015, 11:24 am

This show clashes with RIAT which might count a few out! However, there's a nice list of visiting aircraft so far. Presumably the two visiting Magisters will be the Breighton example and the recently re-flown example formerly at Strathallan?

Visiting Aircraft
Spitfire 1 HFC
Miles Magister x2 (four total with Collection & PH)
Auster J1N
DH Dragonfly

Wondering if it is maybe a typo on the webpage. (Perhaps a TFC-operated example?)

But it doesn't clash with Flying Legends, which is the main thing :)

I'm hoping the Snipe and Albatros will be ready by then as well.

Hope the Snipe and Albatros make it. One thing which surprised is the £28 entrance price, that is the same price as the Sunday shows with up to a five hour flying program, always thought the evening events with just a two hour flying program were cheaper. Not been to a Saturday evening show for many years but can you expect any flying during the day ?

They were £5 cheaper up until the new pricing structure this year. Seems a bit steep to me too, but this does look a good list and I'll have an eye on the weather for this one regardless.

I wasn't planning to go though this show, since I have to get up in the small hours the next day, and drive to RIAT.
And heaven knows I need my beauty sleep these days.

But the Snipe and Albatros may have changed my mind...

Yes they a have been a few change to admissions this year, and with the new logo and changes to the Swiss garden etc I am beginning to wonder what else they have in mind to change next year. How long before the SVAS discount is removed ?

If I undertsand correctly, there were some changes in "management", and this is perhaps why there have been changes to the airshows etc. I think the changes have been positive so far, nothing radical, and I have welcomed them. Keeps the Shuttleworth shows "fresh", but without losing any of the charm. Price rises, meh. I don't begrudge them, they're a fact of life - and so far I don't find them "outrageous"...

...and as for the revamped Swiss Garden, blimey - what better way to add some "family" appeal to Shuttleworth (and deliver on their "educational" remit)? I mean, it's got to be better than funfairs and such, right?! If only the birds of prey were still there too.

Had a reply on Twitter. The Spitfire is N3200 (G-CFGJ).

Wasn't expecting it to be either of the ARCo machines since they're both booked in for RIAT, but of the two I'd have preferred P9374 as I've not yet seen it up close (and the fact it's now been sold and likely won't be here much longer?).

Indeed. Even stuff like the Comet must be a doubt. Could leave the show looking a little thin...

This comes as a surprise...

@Shuttleworth_OW: Best of British airshow this weekend, gates open at 11.00. No entry to the Shuttleworth site without an event ticket #ShuttleworthAirshow

What reason is there for that, at this late stage? Half the regular airshow crowd will be at RIAT.

The website is still advertising an on the gate price too.

Poor. Evening shows are already over priced this year, and now OW seems to be heading down this same advanced ticket route as so many others.

Don't think that's what they are saying. I read it as you need to buy a ticket to access the site. Rather than you have to have bought one in advance.

That's standard for Shuttleworth though I thought? The only entry on event days is via the college entrance, rather than through the main entrance. On normal days you can wander round the site without needing to pay, unless you want to enter the hangars or Swiss Gardens. On event days you need to pay to enter the site.

I have no problems with that. Otherwise there would be nothing stopping people just wandering round during the day and hanging around for the evening air show.

Yes, standard I believe. As I recall they always put out that tweet. May just be people are worrying becuse the last show was sold out.

If it's business as usual, then the tweet needn't have been sent, or at least should only have been a reminder of advance ticket sales closing at 4pm today.

The way it's worded implies its now an all-ticket event, and Shuttleworth's failure to clarify on Twitter isn't helping.

Surely can't be advance ticket only. No prior warning/announcement. There's nothing like the Vulcan, or 2 Lancs that could cause a sellout, and it clashes with RIAT.

And if it was advance ticket only, once again: what of SVAS members who must buy at the gate to get their discount?!

We tweeted them several hours ago but as yet have had no clarification.

As I say, their tweet gives the impression of an all-ticket event, and if that's not the case, it could be clarified in seconds.

We're not the only ones interpreting it this way - we've had a number of messages on Twitter from people who feel the same way.
