Shuttleworth Pageant Airshow - 6th September

Post by WG655 »

An understandably small list of visitors so far - both given the time until the event and also seeing as it is the main show for the Collection itself. Mew Gull pair anyone?

Visiting Aircraft
Edge 540
Dakota (BBMF)
Mew Gull

I've never been to a Shuttleworth Pageant and as you've said before it really is the main show for the Collection, so I have two questions: 1) When will the Collection participation be announced or are we to assume that it will just be as many as they can get in the air in the conditions? and 2) Is it likely any other visitors will be confirmed?

Yes please!

I note there's been an aerobatic type at almost every Shuttleworth show this year? Don't recall too many in the past. Why are they booking these things instead of stuff that's more relevant?

I've asked this before as it's not flown at any shows this year - was told the Lysander is out for the season. It's in the engineering hangar with the Spitfire.

DH51 I believe last flew (well, last displayed anyway) at last year's September Pageant show.

According to the last issue of Prop-swing, there is a problem with some rivets on the undercarriage wishbone of the Lysander which is being left until the end of the season to be worked on.

Indeed, talking to one of the engineers it seems quite serious. If it (the wishbone that is and its 500 bolts) fails a stress test and a replacement can't be found it may be it for the old girl....The wishbone not only acts as the u/c but the support point for the wing struts too so there's a lot of related structures.

I thought that the DH51 was the aeroplane involved in the accident that caused Trevor Roach's death. If this so I would doubt if it's airworthy.

I don't remember it flying last year.

Trevor Roche...died when the engine of the 1923 de Havilland DH 53 Humming Bird he was flying failed shortly after take-off at an air show at Shuttleworth’s Old Warden Park

If you read the report the engine did not fail on the 53.

Every year there is a decision made on which airframes to rest during the coming season, this is purely for man power reasons as trying to keep over 45 aircraft, many of them unique on standby is a little much to ask of 8 engineers.

You may be right, I was just interested as to whether the 51 was in fact a mistake and it was not airworthy so I googled it  The quote is, I believe, from Trevor Roche's obitury in the Telegraph from soon after the crash
