Shuttleworth Fly Alongside flights

Shuttleworth Fly Alongside flights

Postby Barry on Fri 28 Jul 2017, 10:51 am

Shuttleworth have announced their Fly Alongside programme which was covered rather prematurely in an issue of FlyPast.

Dates are now set for 24/25 August allowing air-to-air photography from the Scillonia Airways Dragon Rapide G-AHAG of a variety of Shuttleworth aircraft. These are the DH88 Comet, Hurricane (R4118), Lysander, Gladiator or Mew Gull. Details at:

I'd heard about these at the last show, and was told that the idea was to undercut Duxford. Looking at Classic Wings website, they offer 10 minutes longer, flying alongside a Spitfire, for £51 less... These are "introductory prices" too.

Do you get to pick the aircraft you want or is it random?

I'd imagine it's random, otherwise everyone would be asking for the same aircraft. You'd be pretty cheesed off if the party in front of you got the Comet or Hurricane while you were left shooting the Mew Gull...

Seems expensive, and this is an "introductory" price too.

Still, if it helps to fund the Collection, so be it.

Timetable in the link gives times of the flights and which aircraft are flying alongside. Pick a time and hope it's not full.

Taking pictures from a Rapide, with all the biplane rigging in the way for most seats, is not ideal for air to air. Get a skyvan in and perhaps.

Pictures of the Classic Wings ones seem to have been alright.

Depends on which seat, if seated towards the back or the middle of the plane the view is partly obscured by the wing.

I've found it to be the opposite. You want to be seated as near the back as possible for shots out of a Rapide.

Hats off to Shuttleworth for doing these, I'd love to do one with the Comet or Gladiator. The choice of only weekdays is odd, however.

Following the success of the flights on 24/25 August which in the end used the DH88 Comet, Hurricane (R4118) and Lysander further flights have been set up for 26/27 September. Scheduled for these are the Comet, Hurricane, Lysander and Gladiator.
