three from the sixties - final update

Postby Riessen2 on Fri 10 Aug 2012, 7:15 pm

To address Adrians wish for more "golden oldies" I took three random slides from my collection. Clean them, scan them and gave a bit of love from Photoshop.

Canberra PR.9 WH794 from 58 sqn at St. Mawgan in September 1967.
Image

Sea Vixen FAW.2 XJ582/721 from 766 sqn at Yeovilton in September 1968.
Image

Belvedere HC.1 XG452 at Cranfield in June 1966.

Hope you guys enjoy them.

To be honest nothing special. I scan them with 3600 dpi (Plustek 7600I) and then do the obvious things in photoshop like levels, contrast, colour ballance, noise reduction and a bit of sharpening.

The key was to use a good quality camera lens (even Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Minolta made top 35mm cameras in those days) plus Kodachrome II (later K25) colour slide film. This combination has stood the test of time and works very well with todays' scanners with little adjustment necessary in Photoshop, providing you had framing, focus and exposure all 'spot-on' when you took the shot.
If you used an inferior camera, film made by Agfa or even worse Ilford, then you may have to do some work in Photoshop to produce a good digital image. If you took prints and not slides, then the results would be significantly reduced in quality as a print is a secondary image whereas a slide is a primary image (a positive negative!)

Of course Adrian is right. As I have collected fairly good quality Kodachrome slides it is a little beat easier to work them. Seeing all the nice reactions and the amount of people that have been watching them I have prepared another three.

Andover C.1 XS643/D 84 sqn at Sjarjah on 7 May 1969.
Image

Jet Provost T.4 XS226/42 of the Red Pelicans demoteam from the CFS at St. Mawgan on 13 September 1968.
Image

Royal Navy Phantom FG.1 XT862/VL-722 at Yeovilton on 4 September 1969.

Enjoy.

Absolutely right of course! I started out in the 60's using Kodachrome. Tried Agfa once, didn't like it. Never used Ilford. Continued using mainly Kodachrome 64 plus some Fuji Sensia, Velvia and Provia later (not bad) until being dragged kicking and screaming into the digital age!

Are you sure you don't have a direct line to Dr Emmett Brown? The quality on these is better than some pretty good DSLR shots on here!
