England-Leads the Field !

Post by Fred Martin »

Well yes , we did once , and here to remind us is a random selection of some of the many top class products of our once great and more or less independent aircraft industry . I hope these pics cheer up Westy and all of our other loyal England fans , but I have already compiled a follow up batch to these , just in case you understand !

Many thanks Fred - much appreciated and already feeling so much better

It's almost worth getting knocked out on Wednesday just to see your next batch  By the way, fantastic Vulcan pics, and please feel free to add as many of those as you have or want.

Again a fabulous reminder of times past - thanks for taking the time to post them. I remember the pair of dayglo marked Lightnings in shot #8 vividly. The photo was taken before they took part in a 2 on 2 dogfight at an airshow at Binbrook (can't remember which year either 1977 or 8?) Some of the temporary dayglo tore off the aircraft as they buzzed the Q sheds nearby where I was standing and a bit landed right next to me. I still have it stuck inside the cover of a book.

Superb, and the scan quality is so good they could have been taken on digital!

Out of interest, what camera and film type were they taken on originally, and what scanner do you use?

Many thank for posting.

Andy

Thanks to you all for your comments on these pics . To answer a couple of questions , they were all shot on Kodachrome II / 64 film using a variety of cameras ranging from a Praktica Nova 1 to Nikon FM's ( what else ! ) using a variety of lenses , my favourite being a Prinz Galaxy 300mm telephoto costing £29 and of unusually exceptional quality for that brand and price . All were scanned on a Konika / Minolta Dimage IV film scanner , unfortunately no longer available to buy new . I cross my fingers every time I switch it on !
The shot of the four Vulcan scramble has been published in a book . " Vulcan Test Pilot " I believe was the title , but it is also on a Vulcan CD-ROM that I produced two or three years ago , along with a total of 240 other shots ( still a few available ! ) .
Well must dash , Fabrio wants my advice on who to pick for next Wednesdays debacle .

The pics are great,I reckon that Vulcan scramble shot was at Finningley,I saw the Vulcan Scramble at Waddington 76 ,as luck would have it the scramble was in the first half of the show with pretty good weather(it peed down second half!)
the Lightnings had a tail chase at Binbrook 78 for sure ....I believe an F6 was intercepted and shot down by an F3  ...

Again some really amazing pictures Fred, And I have that Cd rom with all the vulcan pictures on if anyone hasnt got a copy, go and get one as there are some amazing shots on it. Abingdonman that was taken at the Finningley Airshow in 1981, the last public Qra scramble and the pic of XL359 was one of them along with XM575, XL444 and XM648, which was the display Vulcan for the show. I was only 9 and I remember it like it was yesterday.

I will now take my anorak off

Vulcan shot is just stunning...reminded me of how much I watched and never shot.

Quick suggestion...have you considered using HDR? Only joking!

Please keep posting these corkers.

Best wishes, ian
