Heathrow in the mid 70s

Postby pphillips on Wed 23 Feb 2011, 9:53 pm

Thought I would scan a few slides from Heathrow in the years between 1974 and 1977.

Shown on approach in March 1974 is Sobelair Caravelle OO-SRC

Image

On the same day a Cyprus AW Trident arrives

Image

Followed not long after by Argentinian B707 LV-LGP. The airline ran a scheduled service to London in those days

Image

Seen on departure in March 1974 is Iberia B727 EC-CBB

Image

Also lining up on 27R (although I think in those days it was 28R) was a Swissair Coronado

Image

Over on top of the Queens Building a line up headed by Lufthansa B737 D-ABET on the same day in March 1974

Image

Again on approach is Olympic B707 SX-DBO

Image

Lining up to depart in April 1975 is PanAm B707 N406PA

Image

A Seaboard World Super DC8 N8633

Image

Also a British Airways Tristar

Image

Air India B707 VT-DJJ lines up in April 1975

Image

Once more on approach but now in March 1977 is TAP B707 CS-TBA

Image

A300 F-BVGG is also on the approach in March 1977

Image

Climbing out in January 1977 was a National DC10 N81NA an airline soon to be taken over

Image

Also an Air India B747 VT-EBE leaves the ground

Hope you all enjoy.

Wow! Thanks a million Paul. Suddenly I'm a teenager again, just off the overnight coach from Teesside with my bus rover ticket in my pocket and not a care in the world. Happy days.

This is just before I got interested in planes. About 1976/77 was the start of my slide into the abyss.

Nice pics that brought back some nice memories.

I've still got my 1976 copy of JP World Airline Fleets, printed on Blue Paper and all for the princely sum of £2.50.

Thanks for posting

great memories for me. I was but a sprightly teenager then who spent practically every Saturday and Sunday and Heathrow, plus numerous days during school hols. Must have seen every one of those aircraft.

However, long gone for me, and having 'converted' to military only in my early twenties when I became more mobile with a motorbike and then a car, I have no interest in civvies now. But hey, that was my introduction and when I think of all the places I spotted that are no longer accessible at LHR!!!

Christ it was great in those days.............

Superb , happy days , "real aircraft" in those days. Battling with 35mm and exposure settings ...... wish we had digital then. Always love seeing these old shots , I was teenager (just) and those older aircraft had more charm and character than these damn Airbuses and Boeings today - they all look alike.

Coal burners all of them in the 70's ..... what ozone layer ! oh for a time machine

Seconded. As is the CV990, replete with aft-fan CJ805s, lovely stuff.

The Caravelle looks like it's something Gerry Anderson would create for an episode of Thunderbirds!
