Old B&W pics

Came across these as I was having a clearout of stuff. I didn't take these, I would either get them from the photo section as the guys knew I was an aircraft nut, or sometimes I would get to chose a neg to test the processing equipment.

1 202 Sqn Lossies Whirlwind, with a winchman a long way below.

2 54 Sqn Phantom. This was a photo that I think was seen a lot in magazines etc
Image

3 23 Sqn Phantoms, probably shot from a Shackleton.
Image

4 16 Sqn Buccs at Lossie. Note the lack of refuelling probe
Image

5 208 Sqn Bucc at Lossie, long before they were based there
Image

6 TWU Hunter
Image

7 Tanker Vulcan on Q intercept of a Bear. I think this was in a few mags at the time
Image

8 Dutch Atlantic
Image

9 892 Sqn Phantom, again probably taken from a Shack
Image

10 20 TFW F-111
Image

11 Nimrod MR1
Image

12 8 Sqn Shacklebomber, in weird lighting
Image

13 FRADU Hunter, again probably from a Shack
Image

14 57 FIS Phantom taken from a Shack.

Some stuff from Belize.

The quality isn't great on some of them, but others are pretty good, especially the stuff shot from Shacks.

No disrespect to your pics but how I'd love to look at that lot in colour! Great viewing all the same!

Me to, especially that Navy Phantom. I'm sure it must come as a shock to some of our younger enthusiasts, that back in the day, B&W was a normal format to print pictures. A while ago Airforces Monthly did a feature on the El Dorado mission against Libya, and it was strange to see a B&W picture in a magazine again.

I know that when I went on my photo course, the instructors told us that they used B&W, as it was easier to spot differences in tones of grey, than colour. I don't know what recce does in the digital age now, but I would suspect they still print out in B&W.

Wonderful selection of pics - but please note that the Royal Navy Phantom is not from 892 Squadron, but from the Phantom Post Operational Conversion Unit (PPOCU) which was stationed at Leuchars from 1 September 1972 until 31 May 1978. The real clue is the use of a single letter code - which was common to the quartet of aircraft assigned, although these did briefly use 'LU' as a tail code.
I am not a loony... I used to be, but I am better now...
