Bristol Britannia 60th - photos request

Postby Andover on Fri 17 Aug 2012, 10:03 pm

60 years ago yesterday (16th - I know, I'm a day late!) the majestic Bristol Britannia (or 'Whispering Giant') made its first flight at Filton.

So, what better time to celebrate this queen of the skies with any pics you might have of it...Here's hoping!

OK, I guess I'll start the ball rolling then with two shots. First, XM496 in 2006. This was when it was parked more centrally at Kemble and they used to tow it to the static park for the Airdays. Now sadly out of sight hidden behind the trees on the north side.

And Cosfords example before the repaint (but now masquerading as the one after '496; XM497) also taken in 2006...

To be fair to the guys who look after '496' it's not "hidden behind the trees" as you put it.... it's now displayed where it can be accessed by the public any day, on the public side of the airfield rather than parked up on the showground side which was only accessible during events? It was subject to a fair few moves around the site before finding it's permanent home - which wasn't easy as the undercarriage was suspect anyway. Far better where she is now, with power to it, parked on solid ground, and well-looked after by a team that can come and go as they please via the public entrance.....

Just wanted to say this as I know the team who have worked wonders on this aircraft; although they know they can't get visitors when events are held on the main showground "Southside" - they have a presence at those events to advertise their work.

Looks like taken at Luton I would guess in 1975 on being sold to Monarch Airlines prior to becoming 9U-BAD of Center Air Afrique. In less than a year, the aircraft was impounded got non-payment of overdue debts and later broken up at Charleroi, Belgium on 25 Feb. 1977.

Lovely stuff  , the Britannia looked 'right' from every angle - it was a really elegant looking aircraft. Such a pity it was made obsolete by the pace of technology. The only one I've seen flying was the last airworthy example beating up Filton runway after its return to the UK in 1997.
Please keep on digging out your Britannia pictures

My humble effort taken at the time of Golf 1 Post, No.2 Group Royal Observer Corps 6 hour round the UK trip. Up to Prestwick joining B.O.A.C training kites in the circuit.Down to Manchester for fly over. Then St Athan and return to Brize. Great times, shame no R.O.C.today for some of you members to join.Image

I have fond memories of seeing Monarch Britannias flying in to Luton during the late 1960s and early 1970s. I probably saw some Britannia Airways ones as well, but it was the yellow livery that stands out in my mind

Here are some photos from my dad’s collection. The quality isn't as good as others in this thread, but they are interesting nevertheless.

First is 4X-AGB of El Al at Farnborough in 1957:

G-ANCA also at Farnborough in the same year:

Finally, Duxford’s G-AOVT, in BOAC service, at Heathrow in 1963:

The past is a foreign country: they fly different aeroplanes there.
