Graf Zeppelin Does... Northolt - Updated 21 Aug 15
So the tables have been turned. Phil's now the one pestering to get his images up after the US Trip ones acted as some form of Total Recall for his month out there!
So, before we start with French dayglo, USMC and USN carrier visits, Bahraini Hunters with Sidewinders and his time as a movie star (yes, honestly!), I thought we'd start at Phil's spiritual home at Northolt. The following are from a small selection added to his Flickr photostream, and there'll be more to add as I come across them - Shackleton anyone?
Starting off with a base visit on 18 May 76:
Andover C.1, XS597 of 32 Squadron
Varity T.1, WJ915/W, ready for the fire dump
Gazelle HCC.4, XW855, of 32 Squadron - always did like the look of these
On the same day, a German Transall (5094) and this French Noratlas, 90/62-QW, were also around
And finally, I know this isn't technically the best image you'll ever see on here, but this Dutch Navy Neptune, 214, was one of a pair that visited on 19 May 1976, the day after his base visit, typically! Also logged was Norwegian Twin Otter, 184 and US Army C-12A, 73-22261.
Whilst on the subject of visiting aircraft, Phil's log book has the following entries at around the same time:
141002 - US Navy C-131F from Rota on 6 May 76
914 - French Navy PA.31 on 10 May 76
9T-TCB - Zaire Air Force C-130H on 12 May 76
A pair of US Army U-21A Utes on 17 May 76 along with a West German Army CH-53G plus a US Navy CT-39G and US-2B
KY2/OT-CDB - Belgian Air Force DC-6B on 20 May 76 along with N586, a Danish Air Force C-54 and C-4 a Dutch F-27M
1103 - a West German Air Force Jetstar was present on 25 May 76
As ever, there's more on Flickr, just click on any of the above images to see the remainder.
Cheers,
Lee

Re: Graf Zeppelin Does... Northolt - UPDATED!
Lovely pictures, nice to see the Andover, Whirlwinds and Gazelle outside of an museum. The Varsity looks quite bloated....
Re: Graf Zeppelin Does... Northolt - UPDATED!
What can I say, wonderful images Lee and Phil. Absolute belters and you have made my day seeing these. Bring them on. Sadly I remember all the visitors you note at this time. I would catch the bus after school to go and see them. I once walked from Feltham to Northolt believe it or not to see an Indian Constellation and a C-118. Got home a silly o`clock.... parents weren`t happy! Please keep these coming. Neptunes and Noratles, what can I say.
Best wishes, Ian

I agree with Ian - keep them coming Phil. They bring back great memories of a fantastic period in Northolt's history.
Particularly remember walking towards the compound as 9T-TCB landed!

Wow, they bring back some memories! Stunning as usual.
Re: Graf Zeppelin Does... Northolt - UPDATED!
The Varsity brings back all sorts of memories
6th April 1971 and a spotty Air Cadet about to make his first ever flight whilst on Easter Camp at 6 FTS, RAF Finningley, the aircraft?
Varsity T1 WJ915 coded W on a four and a half hour nav-ex over the Highlands of Scotland at 10,000 feet
We went on to do a succession of camps at Varsity bases (Manby, Topcliffe, Oakington and back to Finningley) such that during my CCF RAF career I logged about 40 Hours in them
Happy Days

If you've enjoyed this half as much as I have,
then I've enjoyed it twice as much as you!

Re: Graf Zeppelin Does... Northolt - UPDATED!
Those were the days,I used to live in north London plus being a postman from 1969 to 2003 I made many a mis delivery watching a prop job drone over on the way to 26.
Always something special would turn up for Farnborough week.

Re: Graf Zeppelin Does... Northolt - Upadated AGAIN!
Some more golden oldies...
West German Air Force VFW-614 1703, 8 May 79
Staying with the Germans, here's a lovely CV-440 taken on 20 March 72
The only grey/green Andover C.1, XS644, seen on 18 July 75
Oncew a very VERY common sight, a USAF HC-131 landing on an aeromed flight in April 1972. (In fact, they were so common Phil stopped noting the tail numbers!!) And for those that weren't aware (and know the area), therer was a USAF hospital in South Ruislip (now the Victoria Rd Retail Park). HQ 3rd AF was also there...

Actually Lee, the old Aerovac Convairs were designated C-131A(M) and came in most weekdays. The 3rd AF Hospital closed in 1971/72 when the new Lakenheath hospital opened. The Convairs operated alongside a small fleet of C-118A(M) and were all replaced by the C-9A (which also carried the red cross tail marking in the early days

Ok - the Convair went to the USCG next and I suppose that'll be where it became an HC-131 then!

Just as good for those younger of us - makes us very jealous of the beauties we missed.
