Wittmund-based TLG 71 is currently on TDY at Ämari for four months of Baltic QRA duties so both the lack of activity and the seemingly never-ending greyish weather keep me from shooting at my home turf. So why not fill the gap with a set of pics from better times and go back to the phabulous Phantom era? This set includes some random shots that I have taken throughout the last years of Phantom ops at Wittmund and continues my post on this topic from last year.
#01 37+77 climb-out from RWY26:
#02 QRA jet back-tracking after sunset:
#03 for a short period in 2011 F-4s were flown without any external tanks, giving a very sleek appearance:
#04 37+93 about to release its break chute with No.2 on short finals in the distance:
#05 DARK-Flight initial 08 - three colour birds return from a photo flight on 29JUL08:
#06 Sunset recovery seen from the approach lights:
#07 2-ship approaching RWY08 for a 1v1 over the North Sea:
#08 38+67 3-tanker returning from Cold Lake/Maple Flag in late October 2008:
#09 callsigns like SMOKE or DIESEL had their reason:
#10 the late afternoon light emphasizes the aircraft´s stained underside:
#11 disengaging A/B always produced these beautiful thick black smoke trails:
#12 3-ship initial 26:
#13 and a few moments later one of them on short finals:
#14 37+93 on a FCF (Functional Check Flight) after maintenance, including an unrestricted A/B climb to FL150. Always nice to watch and hear!
#15 38+58 departing neighbouring Nordholz after the 2010 Navy Air Day:
#16 QRA jet taxiing back to the Q-Sheds after sunset:
#17 head-on view of a touch&go:
#18 38+64 touching down, wearing special markings for the last F-4 depot level maintenance:
#19 38+62 in a nice banking turn during departure from RWY08:
#20 drag chutes always look good on F-4s:
#21 38+33 gaining speed after a touch&go with the local kestrel in chase - check six!
#22 an experimental shot - I hope you like it:
#23 a 45sec. long-time exposure of night flying activities with one jet performing a touch&go and another one in the background on downwind:
Thanks for looking!
Cheers, Chris

WOW! I do love an F4
Re: Wittmund Phantoms - Part 2
Super stuff, Wittmund was a magical place when the F-4s were there.
Posting comments on an aviation-related chatroom, are ya? Looks like it an' all...
Re: Wittmund Phantoms - Part 2
I really wish I'd made more of an effort to go to Wittmund and see them before they retired
