I can't recall if I've posted any from Fairford in 1985 before. If I did, here they are again.

Astonishing quality, the RAF Phantom and Buccaneer look like they could have been taken yesterday.
Posting comments on an aviation-related chatroom, are ya? Looks like it an' all...

My first IAT was at Greenham in 79, my next was 87 not missed one since, great to see some images from those I missed in the 80s, anymore from that era Derek/anyone?

Lovely to see them thanks for posting.

Yes, plenty more. My first Air Tattoo was Greenham in 1983 then Fairford 85, 87, 89, 91, 93, 97 then a gap until 2005 then all since then. Oh and Cottesmore in 2000 and 2001. I think I might have posted some of the others a while ago. I guess it wouldn't do any harm to post them again.

If we look at this show purely from a number crunching aspect it wasn't a classic - "only" 12 countries attended and the general feeling was it was a poorer show compared to the Greenhams- this obviously changed big time from '87 and into the '90s. But just looking at this great collection of images just underlines the incredible variety that even a "lesser" IAT could muster and was fairly commonplace at the bigger military events back then, fab days indeed.

That T8M and the 56 Sqn Phantom departures are classic captures Derek and you almost forget little gems like XW930 in her old clothes; as Caper said an incredible line up from the MoD(PE) - 16 unique aeroplanes - which is about as many as the combined UK Armed Forces send these days!

You have probably captured me and my mate in the F-111E pic- not being in FIAT and not knowing the airfield that well we opted for Rhymes field to view departures - I think there were 5/6(!) of us there in total including a groundcrewman from Wittering IIRC.

Great stuff.

What a cracking set. Must start scanning my IAT stuff. Was '85 the year the SR-71 didn't display during the show but did a short routine on departure day?

I could never get on with Agfa for some reason. I used Kodak film exclusively.

Some great memories there Particularly loved the dak line up, felt akin to the great Greenham Herk line up. Left halfway through the flying as on the way there the radio mentioned that it was live aid that day. Well before the internet, these things could creep up on you, and I was only 15 at the time.
