IAT 1973

Post by IanC »

My first Air Tattoo and the first one at Greenham Common. As we approach RIAT this year when we know so much about what we will see, it is odd to think back to that walk or bus ride up the hill from Newbury Racecourse station (I had no car back then). Once at the top aircraft tails came into view and you had the first indication of what was there.

Absolutely brilliant! So much variety, so easily forgotten. I was there, but I can't remember that Skycrane displaying at all. Those were pre-camera days for me, so these are a great reminder.

I was there too, what a great set of shots - but I don't remember the Skycrane either. :dizzy:

Fantastic pictures of time gone by. Love the Skycrane and the camoflaged Mowhawk, I only got to see them when they had gone grey.

Oh good lord, still they come.. these are so so good! :worship: Loving the flight line stuff- obviously a gentle stroll rather than the photo bus scrum! The gina support T-33, RF-4E pair, KC-97, French Neptune and that oh so gorgeous Etendard IVP.. I recall the Tahre flying but not the truck pick up and that Chinook pic is sweet. Another fabulous selection Ian.

I was there too - gorgeous weather and thank goodness I got there really early as there were no barriers or even cones around the static park aircraft, so people-free shots were less challenging. A bit like the USAF Armed Forces Days in the '60s and '70s. A wonderful show with KC-97L, Dutch and French Neptunes and lots more in the flying display.

Smashing post! - I remember it as well. Went to all the Greenham Tattoos and filmed some of the later ones on 8mm. Could only afford to do the US Mil as the cost of movie film, with sound, was so expensive.
Mention of tails reminds me of the many spotting trips I made to Greenham in its B-47 days taking the train from Reading to Thatcham. Nearing Thatcham station the tails of the B-47's parked at the East end of the base would come into view on top of the hill as just part of the normal scenery - that is until the first week of June'64 when they were gone for ever!

Those bring back memories. The bloke in front of the Harvard looks like me at the time, but I can't remember ever having a shirt like that, but then again I may have! My hairs not that different now, just a tad shorter, same colour!

How did you get access to the south side (flying)? There's a thread on FC asking about the identification of some a/c with hangars in the background which the poster thinks is Greenham; however the lack of hangars northside has muddied the waters abit.

A cracking set. Back in those days I didn't get beyond Old Warden for my air show thrills so good to see what was going on elsewhere.
The KC-97 is the pick of a very interesting bunch for me.

Great post, thanks. It looks odd with no barriers.

Have you a link to that post? I do enjoy a bit of airshow /airfield I.d.! There were very few large buildings at Greenham apart from the large hangar on the South side that is still extant.

Thanks for that, I don't think he's talking about an IAT...
