Re: Leuchars airshow 1996
Another belter from the archives - thanks Dougie.
True story: I lived in Crail at the time, about 15 miles from Leuchars as the crow flies. When I got home in the evening after the airshow, my dad and brother, who had spent the afternoon working in the garden, asked me if "something massive" had got airborne at about 4pm. With (presumably) the wind blowing in the right direction, the noise from the B-1B taking off had travelled all the way down the coast!
1996 was my first ever glimpse of the Frecce; I also remember the arrivals days that year being outstanding, the highlight perhaps the arrival of the 2 F-104s from the Italian AF being escorted into Leuchars by a pair of Lossiemouth Tornados. 1996 was also the year that the 'spotty' Jet Provost cut the corner too fine between base and finals and nearly ploughed into the clump of trees between Leuchars railway station and the airbase! He had to climb to clear the trees, causing a momentary panic for those of us in the field at the time...
