Saab 100th anniversary show, Malmen AB, June 2012

Post by Skyflash »

Bizarre to think that this now qualifies for the 'Oldies' section, but there we are... passage of time and all that. :dizzy:

Anyway this was a good event, though somewhat marred by appalling weather - I don't think I've ever been as cold at an airshow. Even with extra layers on I still spent the entire day shivering away like crazy, not what you anticipate in early June.

I hope that these are of interest - note that it was a different Draken which flew then to the one which the SwAHF uses now, which is a twin-seater.

First up, a taster of what we can expect at RIAT in the summer:

I like this shot: makes it look like the mighty Viggen has rocked up at a village fair

We got a full demo from the South African Gripen:

You may wish to Czech that comment.

Looked an interesting show. Flying shot from outside or special spotter's area? Any of the Pembroke?

Ah yes, the Czechs - good spot. Think there may have been one, actually, the plan was certainly for each Gripen partner nation to be present.

All shot from inside, with no special access required!

I'll need to have a look through my folders when I get home to see if I captured the Pembroke...

That looks like a great line-up but shame about the weather. One day I will make it to one of these Swedish airshows and capture all the classic aircraft they have, hopefully with a second airworthy Viggen they are working on... and maybe with a guest appearance from the Norwegian Starfighter
Some very nice shots in this set, thank you for sharing these!

Nice photos. Do you know what happened to the single seat Draken?

I know what you mean about the cold.Me and the Mrs attended this show, and spent much of the show huddled together in the exhaust fumes from a generator near the Herc - only warm place on the base as far as we could find. But otherwise it was a great show.

Judging from that weblink, they are also currently working on what appears to be a split-camo Viggen...
