Pic 'n' Mix 1985-1988 Early Days

Post by planenuts »

Hi chaps,

We all had to start somewhere, and this is my place (a flavour of). It's completely random subject-wise, but all chronological.
Being photos of photos, they are still fuzzier-looking than a factory of felt, but you'll get the idea.

Considering I was still at school during this time, and had to sweet-talk my old man to take me places, I didn't do too badly with a pants camera......

Flambards Aero Park, Helston 1985 (when it was aircraft, not rides). Had no camera then, permission to take 2 pictures.
Whirlwind XN258, now at Sunderland museum. Could've snapped the Scimitar, Buccaneer, Gannet, but no......a Whirlwind.

Impressive selection of aircraft there - very interesting.

Regarding your photo of the Tiger Moth this site seemes to think that it was 'lost' in France in June 1940. Given they were made out of paper and string I'm guessing there wasn't much that could be salvaged so presumably the aircraft you saw is another airframe carrying an 'incorrect' registration.

I was one of the Engineers on the T-33, it was owned by Aces High.
This looks like Biggin Hill the year we displayed and one of the main gear got stuck after one the doors went up before the gear so it was stuck out.
Brilliant aircraft to work on and to fly in as well.

The Pilatus P2 was damaged by vandals after it had made a forced landing, not sure where it is now.
Hunter T7 XL614 was exported and put on the US register so may still be about.
The TBM Avenger was owned by OFMC, but now resides in Australia or New Zealand.
The P40 Kittyhawk, has been exported back to the USA, was owned by The Fighter Collection in your photo, but Hangar 11 at North Weald owned it for several years before its recent sale.

Hi chaps,

Many thanks for comments. Whoever we are, early efforts will be notoriously awful.......see above.

Mr Blackbird, you do not need to look forward......my next one '1989 still early' is already on board, with 1990 ready to come imminently.

All efforts are distinctly out of focus, but hey, it's good to share if what you share is good.

Happy snapping chaps,

Rupe

It was a different P2 which was damaged by vandals after the forced landing, G-BJAX was withdrawn from use in the mid 90s and following a few ownership changes was last seen in Germany with Meier Motors as a source of spares.

The RCAF Harvard was damaged at Little Gransden and subsequently rebuilt by ARCO as Taz.

Sadly my old man didn't really want to take me to airshows, they had no attraction for him whatsoever, and when we did eventually get to Biggin Hill for our local Battle of Britain show it was all over and everyone was leaving. It wasn't until I got a bit older and could take the shuttle bus from Bromley North Station that I got there when the airshow was actually still under way.
