Sounds pretty accurate for the Mail to be honest.

For the benefit of uneducated half wits (ie me) do the callsigns (CLEAN / TABOR etc...) always correspond to the same aircraft type? Or is it not always possible to know what aircraft the callsign is referring to until it's much closer?

Cheers learned folk :-)

CLEAN will always be a tanker, TABOR always a receiver.

There are pairs of callsigns allocated to 'drags' such as this, but they aren't allocated to specific types.

GOLD (tanker) and MAZDA (receiver)
BLUE and RETRO
etc

When it comes to the tankers, it doesn't always mean that they're all the same type within a flight ... if it involves a large number of aircraft ( or a few aircraft which will need large uploads ) you could have a situation where there are 2 pairs of tankers - say, BLUE 21 & BLUE 41 - where one pair will be KC-135s & the other pair will be KC-10s.
You may also notice a theme with the tanker callsigns -- Colours ( BLUE & GOLD, COPPER also used in the past )....Others used are : Currencies ( MARK, DOLLAR, DINAR, YEN, QUID )....Oil-related ( OPEC, SHELL, EXXON )....Mexican ( ADOBE, CACTI )
And it doesn't always follow that the receivers are US aircraft - the F15s which are due over are Saudi AF ones, for example, but they could just as easily be RAF or Luftwaffe Tornados, etc.

Don't know if its significant, but 2 x KC10 Clean 01/02, on ADSB Exchange, came out of New Hampshire, couple of orbits east of Long Island getting into trail with 500ft vertical separation, headed of East along the coast. Just did a single orbit over Nantucket but headed off east again. Headed towards Nova Scotia. Could have picked up fighters to trail them over?

Should be bringing F-15Es from Seymour Johnson AFB. They stopped overnight at Bangor, Maine, after yesterday's cancellation.

Looks like two possible flights of six and four jets respectively.

CLEAN 01 looks to be RTB

Edited to add...
CLEAN 08 is up out of Mildenhall, heading West -- don't know if related or a separate tasking

Reported to be tanking the USMC EA-6B's that Clean02 was supposed to meet before it's emergency.

Sadly, not UK bound

Not showing it's callsign on ADS-B Exchange ( although it is on Live-Mode-S ) just it's T/No. 87-0124 , for those who want to track it.

Dan

Lakenheath very rarely NOTAM themselves closed during federal holiday's anymore. They seemed to stop that during sequestration in 2013. It will be a no fly day as always though

Thanks Gary.

Are we to assume that the F-35s for this exercise were just an urban myth?

Posts on milscanners say there should be a dozen F-22s, not coming from CONUS, tankers are BLUE 61 to 64.

Only one showing on ADS-B Exchange so far is BLUE 61A, currently heading SSE midway between Algiers & Palma.

BLUE 61A no longer showing on ADS-B Exchange.
There's now BLUE 62 North of Tunis & BLUE 51 over Sardinia.

Not sure about the F-35s the F-22 are coming back from the desert or an exercise that way. So could be just transiting through if the former?

Lots of rumour not many facts about

Did 6 days of 12 hour shift so a little out of the loop  . appears they or their first tanker (Blue 63) is out of Al Udeid according to Jeroen on FC, thought it would be odd for them to stop off after a deployment for an exercise. Then again that's what the USS Bush did that

Just checked the FC staff section no word on any press day yet
