I caught a glimpse of what looked like a Merlin some way off at the same time, not as low but still fairly low down. It disappeared into the gloom as soon as I saw it though, so may have mis-spotted!

Banking sharply right over Frenchay common just north of Bristol 10 minutes ago - really low (as in airshow low) which is pretty unusual for round here.
