Atlas circling

Post by Andover »

Earlier this evening, an Atlas flew several circuits, a few miles NW of RAF Benson. Anyone know anything?

ZM412 was holding, in a race-course pattern from Didcot to the Benson overhead with about 12 orbits between about 18:30 and 19:10, then headed off east descending to 1000ft. I assume this was for a fly-by somewhere (RAF High Wycombe?), followed by a return to Brize.

While in the Didcot-Benson "hold", a Chinook showing as ZK563 on ADSB, was hovering in the center of the orbit!

All in all, quite a spectacle!

I think they may have flown over Strike Command /RAF Naphill/whatever it's called these days  I was just standing in Stokenchurch awaiting my finest local middle-eastern cuisine (aka standing in line for a kebab!) and saw a Chinook flying approx NE or E from RAF Benson direction towards Naphill, followed seconds later by the Fat-Lass. First time I've ever seen one over our village.....
