Lanc over Derwent
Re: Lanc over Derwent
what a shambles, the Typhoon flew over , just been on the radio, its also been spotted over Chatsworth as well, so much for the low flying.

What was the weather (cloud cover) like?

They wouldn't have flown through potentially hazardous weather conditions knowingly and in peacetime either Dan, as well you know.

Gutting the lanc couldn't make it today especially with all the great weather lately. I guessed the typoon made it as it just passed really low over where i am in south derbyshire around 12.40. RIP to all involved in operation chastise.
Re: Lanc over Derwent
Looking at the cloud cover in the photo at 12:13. Looks fine to me.
This seems like a case of too much information...

What a massive balls up.
I’d just got down to the tree line as the Typhoon began its run. Managed to see a wing and a tail flash past.

Re: Lanc over Derwent
it took a really circular route to the dam too, staying at altitude until the last 2-3 mins, passing a few miles abeam southbound the derwent, before turning north to run abeam the other side before dropping down to RIAT display heights for a sedate non event flypast.
shame for those that went, but looking at the comments on the local rags web site, it seems like a lot of them felt they were entitled to see the 'spectacle' unfortunately.

not sure how it was a balls up to be honest.
Tiffie advertised as going, then a cancellation due to weather, then a time on target released, plus full tracking on ADS-B for those with a phone or i-pad.
now if you'd have said 'it was not very good, dynamic, fast or low' i'd have totally agreed with you.

I think the balls up was the misinformation posted by the BBMF. A little premature on the cancel notice. I'm sure they were just trying to help but in this case it led to people missing what they had made considerable effort to see.
Re: Lanc over Derwent
I fully get, and indeed support, the no-show by the Lancaster due to weather. And the info put out there was in as much time as they could reasonably give.
They ballsed it by saying that the substitute Typhoon was cancelled, though, when very clearly, it wasn't. Buuuuut it's a storm in a teacup, I think.
Some of the venom and animosity thrown around this afternoon has been very poor. And, once again, paints this hobby in a petty, shallow, and uncompromising light - and the local papers love it. "that's my birthday ruined" indeed. Smh, people are so petty...

Indeed. A balls up on many parts, including my own for giving in and setting off back down the hillside as soon as the announcement came through. I was getting rather chilly, damp and fed up by then.
Tommy, I fully agree with your post in its entirety. The BBMF were good in forewarning us - and in the circumstances it is fully understandable that the Lanc couldn’t make it. At the end of the day, it was a single pass by a plain Jane typhoon. I don’t even think the most ardent aviation enthusiast could get too disappointed by that, never mind care enough to share their sob story with the local rag.
See you all to try again in 2023!

Well done to the BBMF for not giving up and what better tribute.

Re: Lanc over Derwent
Meanwhile the Typhoon did do its flypast despite the 'oh no it won't.....
Go read the comments on PPRune
Perhaps certain folk criticising the modern RAF should go off and do the day job they are doing on Op Shader maybe??
How long do you think you would last stuck amongst a bunch of ISIS fighters, without a perfectly placed (insert weapon of choice).....
