RIAT 40th GB 1/48 SAAB Viggen "Done/ish"

Postby Fumbles on Wed 23 Feb 2011, 7:28 am

I got most of the extras to start this build. I'm really just waiting for the decal sheet. But I can start it now. The Splinter camo paintwork will take me more then enough time for the decals to arrive. So tonight ... not really a start except taking the box out of the closet and taking a picture. This is the box and the extras I'll be using. The seat and cockpit P.E. for sure since the airfix/Esci kit has no detail at all. I'll be doing the kit up in Splinter from one of the last visits to Fairford by the Viggen. Sadly before I started going.

Just a semi small update. I have been working away on the Viggen. Re scribing the panel lines. I have done the photo etch in the cockpit and have started painting the seat. For an older kit. I like this one. No real hassles at all. Not much filler "sofar" (knock on wood). I see a few mistakes in areas such as the nose, the tail and a little on the intakes. But I'm not worried about any of them. The kit will look great once painted up.
So where I am so far. The cockpit is almost done. I need to add a little dark wash to darken down the colour. I matched the colour of the P.E. Almost a blue grey. The pictures show a very blue cockpit. It's not really that blue.

Strange colour cockpit. Shot taken before I put the side sunshade panels on. When the sunshades go on, you will barley see the instrument panel. Once the seat is in. There will be even less seen sadly. Still better then the plain decal panel that came with the kit.

Just another small update. All the major parts are put together. Filler in where filler was needed. All the panel lines have been sanded off and done with the re scribbing. Sun shades installed on the cockpit just need to be painted before the forward canopy gets put into place. I cut the flaps and elevators off to glue them on in a down/parked position later.

Where I am tonight. Not long now till the fun painting starts.

I have now started the part that I was looking forward too and not too. The splinter camo. I wanted to do this paint work for the challenge and sure enough I got it. I am still enjoying the build though.

I started off with cutting out the shapes that make up the airframe like this.
Image

With those cut out I was able to pen out the splinter on the paper like this.
Image

From there I'll cut out each colour and then cut them out of the mask tape thats on a very low stick area like this.
Image
And
Image
I sort of created a new colour. I was not happy with part of the camo being Flat Black. So I added some dark green and even though it does not show in the two shots... This is not black... I call it "Bleen" Anyways the first layer of mask on, over the "Bleen" before the light green is to be painted.
Image

Image

Now the first light green on. This will dry overnight then I'll add more mask to paint the Tan and then again more mask for the final colour of Dark green.
Image

How many custom mask areas do I have? This is only one chunk of the work desk holding them all.

Re: RIAT 40th GB 1/48 SAAB Viggen WIP Splinter paint sorta done

Postby Fumbles on Wed 30 Mar 2011, 6:01 am

First off.. Thanks for the comments everyone. I do appreciate them. Well the masking is off. I did three layers of mask. I followed TwoBobs decal sheet colour codes and I think it looks ok. The pictures show the light green being real stainge. In natural light. The light green is more of a moss-green colour. I do hope that once some wash is on and the flat coat is added, the green will tone down more. What's the worst that could happen? I'll have to re-mask and do just the light green again lol. Alrighty then... on with some updated shots.
This is where I was Friday. The light green was sprayed and then masked off for the Dark Green.
Image
Full coat of Dark Green over two layers of mask.
Image
Once that was dried out over night. The Tan spots were then masked off and sprayed.
Image
And here we go... three shots of the unmasked paint work... again.. the light green just does not show up right with the flash. The bottom was painted with a light grey. The kit will dry overnight and another thin clear coat will be added and then some wash. Then we'll see where I stand with the funky green.

Wow! thanks again for the comments.. I'm well... really though I do appreciate them. I had to take a few days off of the build. The light green was really worrying me. I decided to add a little wash to one wing and the do a spot of flat coat. Once I saw that the light green started to fade into the green that I was happy with. I re-sprayed the gloss and added decals. For the number on the tail. I had to paint that one. There was no Red 57 decal that I could use. I tried to make my own on a decal sheet but the red was transparent. So I stenciled out the 57 and airbrushed it. This kit is the Viggen 37057/ 57-7 that visited RIAT in 1995 from the shots I found around on the net. Except mine has way more dirt :)

Anyways where I am now. Not long to go. I just have to finish the weapons, aftermarket seat, nav lights and a few touch ups here and there especially the front canopy.
