Nose Art GB - Dornier Do17 Z-2 +++FINISHED+++

My first for this GB is Revell's 1:72 kit of the above.

Here is the box shot, let's just hope the mojo has returned.

Here is a quick update of the interior before I close up the fuselage.

Image

Most of these dials etc are from the scrap box, the pilots dashboard is from the kit.

Thanks mate.

Here is a shot with the fuselage closed and the wings on.

Image

I'm a bit disappointed with myself as I didn't check the fit of the wings and tail enough. So when the glue set, there were level differences
which could have been avoided. So now I have had to spend time filling and sanding.

I put the engines on too and now I am masking the glazed areas.

Here is the masking finished.

Image

I've got away with painting canopies freehand before, but recently I made a right mess of one
so I am trying this technique again. I found the process quite pleasant whilst watching/listening to stuff.

I have decided that the build will be on its stand, so I need to paint 4 pilots before fitting the glazing.

Looks good Alan,

Would love to come join you guys but have too many other models to build at the moment for others! Looking forward to this one; the DO17 has always been an interesting subject to build

Thanks James. I can see you are cracking on with your other projects.

Here is an update. The finished build will be on its stand, so I needed a crew.

Image

Good of them to face the camera.

They do need a little tidying after being manhandled into the cockpit. These are sold separate to the kit as part of the 1:72 Revell Luftwaffe Pilots & Ground Crew set. Note that these figures that are sitting are actually undersized to get them to fit into cockpits. :dunno:

As you can see the splinter camo has been started too.

Cheers

That's coming along nicely Alan, don't envy you having to mask up that glazing though.

The detailing on the pilots and engine look fab Alan.

Do I recall you making one of these a while back?

Wow, thanks for the interest everyone.

Here is where I am at with the build as of tonight..........

I'm looking forward to adding the glazing, but the MG's will be sticking out from various places making handling the build
difficult. So, the glazing may be the very last thing done.

Here is an update with the decaling practically finished

Image

I read someone's build review of this kit and he basically said "Don't bother with this kit." A bit harsh
but I think he had a bad time with the decals. It's not the actual product, it's the sheet telling you where
to put them and numbering them. Basically I think I have found 4 that have the same reference number on teh instruction sheet as on the decal sheet! With the smaller stencil stuff I just put those on where I could see that there must be 6 of them, so it must be those 6 on the decal sheet.

The yellow fuselage band wasn't long enough to go in the place indicated. So looking at some references, I chose to leave it off.

The Swastikas are from Xtradecal.

I thought I might get this finished tonight, but no.

Here is picture showing the build after the panel wash has been added and the satin varnish applied over it.

Here is a close-up of the nose art

I won't get this finished tomorrow night either, so hopefully Friday. I want to try to weather it a bit more.

EXCELLENT! Used them before, much better than the Flory Models one!

Thanks guys, I hope to have it finished tonight.

I've only ever used Mig Prime, so can't comment when comparing them to others.

They are easy to use and I used both the Dark Wash for the top surfaces, then the Neutral Wash for the under surfaces. There is another in the range but can't think what it is called (Light, perhaps).

I'm not sure my technique is the best with them and I have found them on a couple of occasions to be a bit abbrasive when wiping them off (but this may be down to me putting too much on etc).

I'm glad Tom has responded as I don't hear about many people using them.
