Arab Air Power GB 01/07/12 to 30/11/12

Postby scotthldr on Thu 14 Jun 2012, 10:39 pm

Arab Air Power will include any aircraft flown by any Country as defined by the Arab League of Nations since it's conception in 1945 and their membership status at the date of your proposed build(year of joining the League are in brackets) those with no date are original members.

Algeria (1962)
Bahrain (1971)
Comoros (1993)
Djibouti (1977)
Egypt (not a member between 1979-89, see below)
Iraq.
Jordan
Kuwait (1961)
Lebanon
Libya (1953)
Mauritania (1973)
Morocco (1958)
Oman (1971)
Palestine
Qatar (1971)
Saudi Arabia
Somalia(1974)
Sudan(1956)
Syria
Tunisia(1958)
United Arab Emirates(1971)
Yemen(1967)

The Palestine Liberation Organization was admitted in 1976. Egypt's membership was suspended in 1979 after it signed a peace treaty with Israel. In 1987 Arab leaders decided to renew diplomatic ties with Egypt and Egypt was readmitted to the league in 1989.

Basically if your build flew with the Tunisian AF before 1958 it wouldn't be allowed, but if it flew from 1958 onwards it is.

For the purpose of ease I'm classing North and South Yemen as Yemen only.

The Guidelines

1/ Any scale
2/ Kit must be unstarted on the 01/07/12.
3/ Aftermarket products allowed in the way of decals/resin/etch.
4/ Injection moulded/ Vac-form/ Resin kits all allowed.
5/ No What If's.
6/ All builds must be presented in a WIP format, followed by a maximum of 6 photos of the completed build in the gallery.
7/ Please use this thread for any reference requests and any related chat.

Please note the extended timescale of 5 months for this GB

My computer still isn't working properly and is going back for further repairs next week for a week, and I'm going to be away from a computer from the 30/06/12 until the 16/07/12 so please excuse my absence. If you have any questions I'll be available to answer them up until Monday.

Ill be entering this one, as its my area of interest. I'll be building a Bahrain EAF F-16, and UAE F-16 soon so i could do these for the GB, also got a resin kit tucked aside specifically for this GB

I've been looking through the stash for what I can bring to the table, and all I have is a TU-22 Blinder in Iraqi or Libyan colours. Is there a good site to get Arab decals from? I've got plenty of kits of aircraft that would be eligible, I just need the decals.

What types of aircraft are you looking at doing? There isn't a dedicated site for Arab decals but there is a lot of choice out there from various sites

I've got plenty of F-3, F-4, F-15, F-16 and MiG-29 kits in the stash that i'd like to do something with. I've a spare MiG-27, but haven't looked into which nations are options yet (do many use the 27?). I've seen decals for an Iranian F-14 which i'm tempted by, also an International Hunter decal set but i'll need to buy more kits. I do have some decals for a Saudi Lightning, but the kits I have are a bit dated (see my recent Lightning builds). I'm planning on seeing what everyone else are doing and then do something different.

Alan i'll very likely do the Blinder during the GB. There's a lot I could learn from building it.

Unfortunately Iran isn't part of the Arab League so doesn't qualify for the GB.

There are decals out there for Saudi F-15's both the C and S versions, High Decal where due to release decals for Egyptian F-4's not sure if they're out yet. F16's decals are available for Bahrain and Egypt. Mig 29 Iraq, Yemen.

The good thing about most of the Arab Air Powers is that the markings are fairly basic and consist normally of roundels, fin flash and either Arabic or English serials. Zotz do a great Middle East Air Power sheet which covers just about every nation mentioned above, although expensive several of you could club together for it.

Lebanese markings come in the Zotz sheet as well.

I realised that last night  . I've found an Omani twin stick Jaguar in my stash, so i'll probably start with that and then go on to the Blinder. After that it'll depend on what time is left and what other builds people have done.

I'll be doing the Hobby Boss 1/72 Mi-24V Hind E in Iraqi markings.
Not sure yet whether to get some photo-etch to go with it or not.

Alan I'm sure you'll have those 11 kits finished in no time

Looking forward to it.

That's 'only' three per month, you can do it Alan  .
I don't think I'll get an aftermarket set for my Mi 24 since most reviews I found on the internet seem to be very positive about how well detailed the kit is.

Looking forward to this GB!

Hi all,
Wasnt going to join in this as i didnt have anything in the stash that fitted, well rather i have 2 1/144 C-17s but i wanted an RAF and USAF machine but then the Revell kit comes with Qatari markings OOB and seen as i caught the colourful one a few years ago, it ties in with "Build what you've seen!"

Oh well, will be a late join if i do, but might just dive into my 1/48th Airfix Spitfire/Seafire crossover! :dunno: :dunno:
Arabest,
Geoff.
I work with Tommy the pilot!

I'm in on this one with Trumpeter's 1/48 SU-24. Aries cockpit set and some photo etch. Algerian markings. Plus!!! Since there will be time. I'll be adding in the 1/48 Eduard SU-22 markings unknown yet. I'll figure that one out when I return from overseas mid July. I am really looking forward to this group build.

Hi all, I'm back although only for tonight as I'm off on holiday tomorrow :yahoo:

Good to see so much interest in this GB and from the sounds of it there should be some great and interesting builds resulting from it. Once I get back I still have to finish the F16 then I'll join in with a 1/48 SU22 M3 in Syrian AF marks, til' then happy building and I look forward to seeing a few builds started and Alan's first 6 finished  .

Hi All

i would quite like to join in and am thinking of doing an Iraqi Sea Fury (after being inspired by the plane at the recent Yeovilton Air day). However I can only find the trumpeter kit in 1/48- which is quite expensive - does anyone know of any other 1/48 versions of this plane? I do not yet have a stash so can't pick anything from there!

Hello Matt,

Hobbycraft did a 1/48 Sea Fury. It's quite an old kit so not sure if you can easily find it, but is worth a try. If you google on Hobbycraft 1/48 Sea Fury you will find some reviews and comparisons between the Hobbycraft and the Trumpeter kit. Both have their pros and cons, but the pro for the Hobbycraft kit is that it's a lot cheaper

I will hopefully get my entrant started once I complete the current build which has been on hold for the last few weeks for one reason or aonther

Keep up the great modelling and any questions on the GB feel free to ask either here or via PM
