World War 1 GB - Albatross D.III ++FINISHED++

World War 1 GB - Albatross D.III ++FINISHED++

Postby Deacon on Mon 16 Jul 2012, 10:42 pm

On with the next build.

I was hoping to post this last night, but couldn't get into the Photbucket web site.

Another German fighter from Revell.....

Image

as I said, I started this yesterday, so here is a shot of where I was with this build last night....

Image

and no body gets any prizes as to whose aircraft this is.

Unfortunately my Xbox was calling tonight, so I didn't get much done, here is a shot with the decals on...

Image.

Now as with a lot of the German aircraft from WW1 trying to get an exact picture from references has been thrashed out by cleverer people than me.
Suffice to say, I have accepted that Manfred's D.III (or one of them at least) was red all over and had the national insignia brushed over with red paint
(who would have thought, low viz markings started in WW1!).

There is a photo of him sat in a D.III with the crosses painted over, whether all of them were I don't know, but I have chosen to do so.

Thanks for looking.

Nice start on it. I tried this one myself once.Wanting an Albatros was the reason I moved up to 1/48. I turned three different models into bin liners, each time I had a major undercarriage fail so I figured bigger, stronger bits might help.

I will be watching out for the undercarriage. Thanks for the heads-up.

Some shots of the build.

Here are the resin guns to replace the awful kit ones...

Image

and here is the engine painted and the exhaust hollowed out....

Image

here they are in-situ.....

Image

and then, unbelievably, here is the finished kit...

Unfortunately the holes on the top wing for the rigging caused some problems because I then had to try to get the red to match and there was also some damage to the national insignia.

But, I am on the whole, quite chuffed with this.

Thanks mate.

I have have had feed back from other sources telling me I must try harder!

There are one or two things I can do to try to 'enhance' the model a bit.

Thanks Matt.

I think I've ruined this build as I applied a satin varnish to it and something has reacted with the varnish. Hay-ho

Neat looking little build. When I first looked at it, the first thing that came to mind was Porco Rosso!

Hope it's not a write off mate looks a cracking job

There does seem a certain irony to low vis markings on a bright red airframe though!

Thanks for asking mate. I'll let you decide....

It's left a powdery finish and turned some if the red pink. I should have left well alone.

It's quite a nice pink, though.

I think I would attempt a fix somehow. I think I have some decals at home, they're from a Roland but the crosses should be very similar. I'll check tonight and if you want to try them I'll post them.

You're a gentleman sir, thak you.

But I'll leave it for now and try to tidy it up perhaps towards the end of the GB.

Thanks again

I was right! I found them.

According to the drawings in my Harlyford the width of the wing on the Roland was 3 ft - the wing on the Albatros was 3 ft but towards the tip it gets wider. The crosses should be fine, not sure if you need the smiley face though. If you want them pm me your address and I'll send them through the wonderful snail mail service.
