Arab Air Power GB - Revell 1/72 Hawker Hunter FINISHED

Post by Thommo95 »

Its been a long time coming but I have finally got back round to modelling again, I think this proves that the longer GB format has its place, as I lost my modelling bug. The main reason was having no time to get anything due to the most hectic summer I have ever had, airshows, work experience, Duke of Edinburgh Award and starting six form. :dizzy:

Anyway I have made a start finally for this GB and a Hawker Hunter of an as yet undecided Arab nation but I will get to deciding that when I need to get painting.

So on with the build, which has some great details, and looks a great kit, the cockpit detail is very good and hopefully I have done it a bit of justice.

That is it for now but as soon as the nights draw in and the weather turns I'll soon be back modelling

You've been missed Nick.

Sounds like you had a great summer. Was the DoE bronze, silver or gold?

Liking the pit sir, looking forward to the next update.

Thanks very much for the comments so far,

Scott I hoping to make a Lebanese Hunter, so looking into acquiring the Zotz decal sheet, Arab Air Arms No.5 I believe.

Alan, a very busy summer indeed, two weeks of Civil Engineering work experience in London with a family friend. Had a great time there, especially because London City's approach past went past their flat
Then three trips to Wales, family holiday, low fly trip and DoE. So to answer your question and for me to stop making excuses about my lack of modelling, I was doing my Gold DoE, which I have now completed both the practice and proper expedition for. So I have had two lots of 4 days trekking in a few Low Fly areas, so caught the final F3 flight in Wales and a few Tucanos in Yorkshire :yahoo:

Anyway thanks once again and I have fitted the cockpit now, so is starting to go together, its nice to be back to model making lot less strain compared to climbing Inglebrough!

Well some more progress and the cockpit is in place and masked ready for some paint. However, that progress has now hit a snag, the nose wheel and gun section plus the nose itself just doesn't look right? The photos firstly shows the overall progress then two close ups of the area in question one highlighted to show the separate parts then the other un-highlighted to see the overall look. I know some sanding work is going to be required but to what extent and shape I am unsure, as the reference pictures I have seem to have a slight overhang where the red and blue lines on the picture below meet. But I cannot tell if this is just the image's perspective?

Anyway any help will be much appreciated, so on with the pictures

The two pieces that don't look right (highlighted)

and not highlighted

Other progress the wings are coming together

Hope you can help

Nick,

From what I can tell from drawings in SAM Publications "Hawker Hunter" there should be no line (indicated in red on your photo) above the
gun barrel slots.

Where the blue line reaches the red, the blue continues in a slight diagonal to the left, down. So that looks about right on the join.

I hope this helps

Thanks very much Deacon, so filler along the red line and leave the nose as it is? Also the underside is a smooth curve I assume, so the underside of the gun part needs to be sanded into a smooth curve?

Thanks very much for the help,

More progress on the Hunter with the scratch built elements being applied, the large antenna behind the cockpit and the 3 part to the underside "T" antenna seen on Lebanese Hunters. Following lots of research and finidng a book on the Hawker Hunter, I have been able to decide what the colour scheme is to be for the top camouflage Xtracrylix XA1001 and XA1004 and for the underside XA1015. These were the standard RAF colours at the time of the delivery and were kept by the Lebanese air force.

I have also located some decals, thanks Scott, so they are on the way too

Main progress - wings added, cockpit glass masked up,

Painting will start as soon as the colours arrive in the post

Re: Arab Air Power GB - Revell 1/72 Hawker Hunter Paint -App

Post by Thommo95 »

Well it is in the title, I have got the decals and xtracrylix throiugh from Hannants very quick service I must say :D
I don't know what I am doing wrong but had real problems spraying Xtracrylix something I have experienced in the past so hopefully it is a decent enough job on the paint work

A few pictures,

I am planning to paint the serials on, how would you recommend doing this, masking and spraying or hand painting?

I'll be honest mate you're a brave man whichever way you attempt doing the serials. :worship:

If your free hand is good, then do it, but if you are a bit shaky, I'd try the masking. :dunno:

Good luck.
