Airfix GB - Avro Lincoln

Post by Deacon »

With the mojo at an all time high, it's time to do a build that will send it through the floor. :D

I know there isn't much time left on the Airfix GB, but I'll see how far I can get.

A shot of the boxes.......

Image

here is the conversion set....

Image

Image

and just a couple of other items that will be thrown into the mix...

Image

I am so out of my depth with this that, as you can tell, the negativity has crept in already! :D

Cheers

Alan

Hi Alan.

I have a conversion set and a Lancaster kit somewhere in the pile but not sure if the mojo is up to it. Have you seen the Lincoln article and conversion piece using the DB parts in SAM Vol 12, No 4, Jan 1990. Best of luck.

I haven't seen the article mate. I am using threads on BM to help me with this.

Your confidence has inspired me sir, thank you.

I just had to play...........

The wing tips are glued but the wings are not glued to the fuselage.

I am surprised how much bigger the wingspan is compared to the Lancaster!

Can you still buy this conversion? I'm tempted to hunt one down if not.

Coming along nicely there Alan. I'm surprised at how much bigger the Lincoln is than the Lancaster. How are you finding the conversion, easier or harder than you expected?

Well it's been a while and I really need to get cracking on this if I am to finish it for the
GB deadline.

Something has gone wrong (you see Scott, you were right  ) with the resin nose.

Basically, compared to the width and height of the kit fuselage there seems a noticeable difference
when trying to just fix the resin nose on.

I am 99% positive I cut the fuselage in the right place, just slightly taking off part of the cockpit edge.

So, in order to try to sort this problem I have added about 4mm of plasticard.....

Image

This has got to be tapered, but there is still a step, so out with the filler which is presently curing.

The other thing I wanted to do was change the Lanc tails to look more like Lincoln ones, so here is my attempt
(which still needs a little tidying up)....

Image

Thanks for looking.

Cheers guys, but this thing nearly ended up against the wall tonight.

Here are some photos showing the latest progress......

Image

It is the vacformed nose glazing that really did my fruit. It has to sit in the opening of that last shot, but try as I might I couldn't get it to fit in there
without compressing it. This pushed the sides of the glazing out which meant it didn't conform to the fuselage sides!

I ended up trimming it further than Flightpath would have you do and sanding resin off the roof of the compartment and the bottom of it. The fit
I have now is not perfect, but if I do any more work to either part I'm worried I will damage the build.

What's more Flightpath only give you one copy of each transparencie. Actually that's not strictly true, there's no rear turret glazing in the conversion box
I got! :dunno:

Here are two photos of the glazing.

Not looking too bad from this side.....

Image

but there is a gap this side.....

Image

but I may be able to fill it with Krystal Klear. :dunno:

For a bit of self encouragement I took this photo...

Image

it's starting to look like a Lincoln!

But, I've hit a snag. I thought I'd add the exhaust castings........but I only have 6 of one type and I should have 8 of two types! So, I've emailed Flighpath and hope they send me the missing parts, along with the rear turret glazing that was missing.

Don#t dispair mate it's looking the business! I'd be tempted to fill that gap with a plastic shim and just fill it though. So long as it's straight it should look fine?
