Revell 1/32 SBD5 Dauntless

Post by SvB »

Hello all,

I accidentally created two topics for this build which were merged later (thanks Peter). I deleted the first topic which didn't show the Vector Resin engine nor the Eduard set with three sheets of PE to detail this ancient beast. Hence Iain's comment on how uncomplicated this build looks might seem a bit misplaced now...

Sorry about that Iain...

Regards,

Sven

Looking forward to this. I built one of these when I was around ten or 11.

Big Scale GB Revell 1/32 Dauntless SBD5

Post by SvB »

Hello all,

This is my entry for the Big Scale GB, Revell's 1/32 Dauntless SBD5. It's a reboxing of the old Matchbox kit from 1977, so no surprise it has raised panel lines and rather 'clunky details'.

To go with it, this is the very nice Vector resin engine:

Instructions for assembling the engine (yep, that's all you get  )

And some etch from Eduard:

I think this one is going to be a lot of work. I started rescribing the panel lines this afternoon and will be posting 'in progress' pics soon.

Sven

This isn't a WW1 bi-plane?

Who are you and what have you done with Sven!

It's great to have you join in on this one mate, looking forward to this.

It looks wonderfully uncomplicated, without the thousands of tiny pieces to confuse the fat fingered or to get eaten by the carpet monster.

Hello Iain,

I accidentally clicked on the ' submit' button instead of the 'preview' button as I was editing the first post on this topic. So none of the aftermarket-stuff pics showed when you replied...

Which proves, Alan, if it's not a WW1 biplane, and there's no rigging involved at all, I get a bit nervous

Sven

I'd work on the K.I.S.S. principle - Keep It Simple, Sven.

Hello,

I'd work on the K.I.S.S. principle - Keep It Simple, Sven.

Too late, I started rescribing. Quite a bit of touching up to do, but I think I can come up with a reasonable result.

Alsso started removing plastic as per the Eduard instructions:

The etched parts are going to make a real difference I think. Here's the Eduard seat next to the original:

That's it so far. More soon.

I'd completely forgotten that Matchbox did this one. Looks like an interesting kit.

Hello,

Work on the Dauntless is going slow, but steady (I hope).

The resin engine took up most of the time so far, as it has 35 parts already and there are a few more to come, including the ignition wiring.

Image Image

The seat painted and Eduard seatbelts added. I got the early style seatbelts at first (as shown above) but then realized I needed the late style ones.

Image

The flaps had no detail at all so I added some.

Before:

After:

And some etch added to the interior:

More soon.

Hello,

The build has been going a bit slow, but once all the fiddly PE is in it should go a lot quicker. Here's where it's at now.

Various parts of the cockpit and gunners position:

Exhausts hollowed out and painted:

Some detailing in the engine accesory section:

Guns before and after assembling and painting:

And some detailing on the wings before the flaps and airbrakes go on:

That's it so far. More soon.

Thanks for the comments guys!

A few more photos. In the gunners position there's a leather 'belt'. I used oil paint for the 'leather-look'. If you apply Klear to oil paint before it is dry, it cracks the surface of the paint, giving it a well used, worn look.

Hello Derek,

I ran into some major problems with the plastic. Fit of the parts is far from perfect. Especially the engine cowling, which is made up of five parts. I could have rushed it, but after all the work on the PE and other detailling I decided to try and make the most of it, even though that will make me miss the deadline, again

I will post some pictures, hopefully this weekend.

Thanks for the update Sven. Shame it won't make the deadline but I'm looking forward to seeing the end product.
